shopping near ship's pier after 6:30 p.m.
We'll be in Reykjavik with a Princess cruise in Sept. The ship docks at noon, departs at 11 p.m. same day. Our optional excursion departs at 2 p.m., returns at 6:30. The description reads that there will be no shopping opportunity during the excursion. My question-Will shops near the pier still be open after we return at 6:30? My search leads me to believe they will be closed by then. Need to get something from Iceland for our geologist son-in-law. Thanks for any info. or suggestions.

There's not much commercial activity near the pier - just a small tourist shop which probably sells some souvenirs and they may remain open until the ship sails...or they may not. I find it hard to believe that an excursion doesn't offer some type of shopping - even if not a chunk of time set aside specifically for shopping, there will likely be some kind of shop or kiosk selling stuff. Maybe the tour provider sells caps or t-shirts. OTOH, if the ship is in port until 11:00 perhaps you could ask the tour operator to drop you off in the town center since those stores will probably be open late (ask the tour operator), then you could take a cab from the town center back to the pier.

Thanks for the quick response. Like you, I was surprised when reading about our excursion, that at each stop on the excursion, beside the work "shopping" it said "no." I've never been on an optional excursion that didn't have some time to shop. I only need a few minutes. Our son-in-law is the only family member who wants something from Iceland. I'll have plenty of time at our other ports for all other purchases.

I may be incorrect but at most ports the shops which do business with cruise ship passengers generally stay open as long as there is some revenue opportunity.
Have you considered looking at the www.cruisecritic.com site? There is an entire section which deals with the various ports of call and the shopping/other opportunities.

I go to cruisecritic. daily, but am not familiar with the section about ports and shopping opportunities. Usually I go to the roll call of the trip we're about to take. Haven't ventured beyond that. I'll take another look. Thanks for the tip.
