Shopping in Vienna
 

My wife and I are going to Vienna towards the end of May, and she thought it would be fun to shop for a dress for her to wear to our daughters wedding this summer. Does anybody have any suggestions as to where they might go?

You *might* try H&M. It's a department store for women. Although they usually have youngish trendy clothes, sometimes they bring out dresses that can fit any age. And it's cheap! Depending on how popular the area is, you may have to check back daily and go early in the morning--that's what I had to do at H&M in in Munich, but not in Frankfurt. And even if you don't find something for yourself, you may find some good stuff for your daughter!

Vienna is not a shopping or designer city like Paris or Milan but you can have a look at the shops on Kaertner Street and Mariahilferstreet.H&M is mostly casual and don't have high quality products.

banu has given a pretty good list and is certainly correct on H &amp; M. Mariahilferstrasse is not one to bother with for higher fashion. My wife is a fashion stylist so I have been to every women's boutique in the centre. Lucky me, not! A couple of others to add - Michel Mayer in Singerstrasse. Michel is a Viennese designer - a lot of her stuff is black and neutral, so going to her for colour is not a great option. But at least she is not available elsewhere like all the big labels; Kasha - just off Graben, I think Spiegelgasse; Song for trendier stuff, also in the centre; Perfect Selection opposite the Astoria Hotel, Chegini on Kohlmarkt and near Neumarkt; Kohlmarkt in general has more international big name designer boutiques than any other street - Gucci, Armani, Ferragamo etc - but the selection in these stores is far more conservative and limited than many other bigger cities - Viennese women do not have much daring (My wife has to bring half the stuff in from Milan or Paris for fashion shoots - it is not available here). Steffl in Kartnerstrasse is only dept store in first district, but it is small. Laghani is another one on a small side street off Karnterstrasse, opposite the American Bar, near Neumarkt. Braun &amp; Co and Furnkranz would be the biggest fashion stores, but fairly conservative, especially Furnkranz.
