Hi ro:
Shortbread, wonderful jams or honey, a great sweater, heather jewelry, cairngorm jewlery. Good luck!

Anything woolen. Though not much less expensive than in other places, the quality is excellent. I have a small woolen blanket that I bought in '84. It has been washed tens of times. And it just keeps getting softer. Same for my sweaters.

We have found Single Malt Whisky less expensive in the US than in Scotland...Costco can match or beat UK prices. Edinburgh Crystal is very nice, but probably impractical to bring back here.

I was disappointed in the clothes in the woollen mill shops. All the jumpers were very small and the skirts very big - does this mean most Scottish women are pear-shaped? (No offence to our Scottish posters).

What about a cute Loch Ness monster - they come in all sizes and materials. Or a bottle of Drambuie.

shaped more like armchairs - thats my experience, anyway.

tony

Woollens are best bought from small remote craft shops rather than wollen mills which sell mainly factory made stuff.
Look for hand knitted sweaters & socks & keep any eye on the type & quality of wool - eg Harris wool is very hard but is bulletproof.
I remember buying yarn that had been handspun & handdyed (using lichens etc nothing artificial) by an old lady who sold it herself from a hut by the roadside in Harris.
A good cheap buy is a Harris Tweed cap(or some other HT it). These are for sale at the woollen mills etc, the HT name gaurantees the quality.

If you're into jewelry, Celtic designs are found in necklaces, earrings and bracelets in 9kt gold; pretty reasonably priced.
