Shopping for Tapestries?

Does anyone have any tips on the best places in Lisbon to by Portuguese tapestries? Thanks!

By the way I have not yet been to the tapestry museum in Madrid perhaps if you go there too

Just a suggestion--I would put "Lisbon" in the thread title so Lisbon experts open the thread. You will attract more attention that way.

My ex-husband, Rogerio, was born and now lives in Lisboa. I have been to the city a few times and I never ever saw any tapestry stores. Tile stores are everywhere.

was in portugal earlier this year, I don't recall tapestries being as big a deal as say tiles or rugs. The rugs, handmade needlework, are amazing. We bought a rug and it is just so amazing - we hung it on a wall in our bedroom.

I am not sure whether the previous poster was referring to the Tapestry Museum or the Royal Tapestry Factory where they still use Goya designs. You can tour and watch them create the tapestries.

Here is the URL
You can contact the Royal Tapestry Factory, Madrid at the following Email:

I also agree with Thin the tiles in Portugal can be elegant and well crafted.

I'm sure that amsdon was referring to the Real Fábrica de Tapices in Madrid.

For those who are interesting in visiting, it's open Mon.-Fri. only, closed on weekends and holidays and visits are by guided tour only. Open 10-2 and the last guided tour departs at 1 p.m.

I can't remember any specific tapestry shops per se in Lisbon, but there would be shops selling the hand crafted needlepoint rugs from Arraiolos, such as the Casa dos Tapetes de Arraiolos in the Bairrio Alto.
