Shopping at Harrods

Has anyone bought any of the little (7-8") harrods bears? About how much do they run?

Suzette Jul 21st, 2002 10:02 AM

Yes, I bought mine 9 years ago when they were still being made in England. And back then it cost me almost $30. We went last year to England and the bears were not made as nicely and cost around the same price.

I've been collecting the larger (about 14")ones for years. You can purchase them at the Harrod's Heathrow store, skip the VAT and they run (as of last year) around 18GBP.

What is the VAT?

Lou Jul 21st, 2002 10:53 AM

VAT = Very Asinine Tax

20 pounds five years ago for the one about 10-12" dressed like a beefeater. My daughter now 20 still loves it

There's also a Harrods store at Gatwick in case that's where you're flying to/from, but I'm not sure about the VAT. Nomatter, go to Harrods to see one of the larget toy depts there is....better than hanley's.

I bought a small Harrod's bear (6 1/2" sitting) in 1995 for no more than 10 US dollars as I'm sure I would not have paid more. The exchange rate then was the same as now. It is light beige with a dark green bow around the neck with a large H and on one foot (green paw) it says Harrod's 1995. I'm sure I got it in their gift/holiday gifts section. I always love looking at it as a reminder of a fun trip.

I can't wait for my "fun" trip - leaving in a little more than a month! Thanks for the info everyone.

By the way, VAT is 17.5% in the UK.

I am going to London in September. What will the weather be like and how should we be prepared to dress? Where do we find the Dock Martens Shoe Outlet Store in London?
Thanks.
Jane
[email protected]

Betty, someone reported getting one of these bears for a song on e-Bay not too long ago. You might try that.

Jane, the answer on dress as always in the UK is layers.
I'd bring fairly lightweight trousers and some linen weight skirts and blouses. You could perhaps bring a lightweight waterproof jacket with a warm inside liner. I should leave your shorts at home.
Have a look at the BBC weather page http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/
nearer the time of your departure. It will give you a five day forecast.

Message: CAgal- that was ME! LOL. I have seen several more and I wanted to know when (and if) I was getting a bargain!
