Shipping things from Sweden?
 

Hello Fodorites,

Late this month I will be returning to Malmo, Sweden, to go through the last of my dear, late mother's things. Fortunately, there isn't much left: a chair, some knick-knacks, framed pictures and a number of oriental rugs that may be somewhat valuable.

I hope to take some of these items with me and possibly sell others. However, I am considering shipping at least a few of them to the states and this is where I could use some advice. Is there a shipping firm that can do this for me without breaking the bank? I have been considering DHL. Do you have any idea what they would charge?

My father suggested contacting a moving firm that ships internationally. Would that be preferable? Unfortunately, it has been over two years since I was there and so I don't remember every thing left behind in detail. And I won't know exactly what I want to bring back until I go through everything.

Perhaps some of you fellow Swedes and/or Scandinavians would be in the know? I also welcome suggestions as to local oriental rug and/or antique appraisers, although finding that kind of specific information on this forum may be a long-shot.

I am not Swedish or from Scandanavia, but I work for a Swedish company and we do a lot of internal moves. When we moved some folks from Sweden (various parts) to Switzerland, we used Alfa Moving Company. You might want to do a Google search for them.

Also, when I moved from the US to Switzerland, I used Sterling North American from the US to here (and then they transferred me to a Swiss company at some point), but they are worth looking in to as well. I don't know much it cost the company to move me though.

I don't know any co-workers from Malmo per se, but I certainly can ask if you are serious if they can get referrals and such.

It looks like you don't have a very big shipment but DHL would cost a fortune. A moving company would probably not be interested in a few chairs and carpets, or would also charge a fortune.

I suggest that you look for a "freight forwarding" company which works between Malmo and a port near your hometown. Use your local yellow pages. Box up your stuff and drive it to the dock in Malmo. They'll take it from there. A few weeks later you'l be notified that your goods are in the US Customs warehouse in your hometown port. Get your paperwork together and go pick up your stuff. It's easy. I've done this a few times.
