SHIPPING SUITCASES TO THE USA
HI,
WE NEED TO SHIP TO FULL SUITCASES TO FLORIDA, USA. HAS ANYONE EVER DONE THAT, AND IF SO, HOW DID YOU DO IT? WE WERE FORCED TO PAY US$600, IN EXCESS BAGGAGE COMING TO MALTA AND DON'T WANT TO GET CHARGED AGAIN. HELP PLEASE! ALOHA! VALERIE |
Any of the overnight services (FedEx, UPS, etc) are very likely to cost in the hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. I suspect that even shipping it 'standard' would cost at least $100 and take a loooong time. Customs clearance can also be a PITA, when you ship items.
Frankly, I think the cheapest and easiest option will be to just suck it up and pay the excess baggage charges. |
When I had to ship a lot of items home to CA from Italy I put everything in a cardboard box and sent it via land through the Italian PO. It took about 60 or so days to arrive at my house. I didn't not ship the suitcase home as though it was a nice one it would have cost so much consequently it was not worth the money. Do you really need to ship the suitcases too, islandgirl? If not I imagine you would save a lot of money.

Luggage Ships to and from the US they charge around $18.00 a pound

Sounds like you flew Ryanair somewhere and didn't read the not-so fine print.
On regular airlines it is usually much cheaper just to pay an extra suitcase fee than ship. You must pay attention to weight limits though also. I hope you find a solution other than giving your clothes to a charity in Malta. |

Which would be roughly $900 for a 50 lb suitcase. |
After paying $1,800 in excess baggage for two large duffels from Manama to Amsterdam I still had to get them to Los Angeles. I used KLM air freight and saved a lot.

I have only sent one suitcase ahead in my life and that was many years ago. I also sent it air freight, which looks like is still the best way from spaarne's experience.
