shared bathrooms

What is your worst shared bath experience?

Dick Feb 24th, 2005 01:11 PM

Only shared a bathroom once in a B&B.

We could hear someone that was sick in the bathroom during the night.. In the morning we found out that they didn't clean up after themselves.

That was our first and last time..never again would I share a bathroom

SO refuses to do shared Bath Rooms, so I have no choice.

Have not had one as I refuse to stay in a hotel or B&B etc. that has shared bathrooms.

30 years ago I shared a bathroom with 22 members of my dorm room hall--freshman hockey players and football players. Would rather drink Drano with broken glass chasers than ever do that again. It was a very long year!

My hubby and I have separate bathrooms at home, so sharing one in our hotel room is enough of an adjustment.

suze Feb 24th, 2005 02:06 PM

Only tried it once (in Amsterdam to save money on the hotel). I just can't do it. I will find other ways to economize.

Luckily I've avoided those nasty incidents. The only "bad" incident, but it was more a funny one, was when I got out of the shower at a hostel, and a New Zealand girl started chatting with me quite casually, paying no attention to my undressed state. Most hotels and hostels with shared bathrooms do not have shared gym-like facilities, but a few do.

Even though, as a college student, I should probably be doing so, I cannot bring myself to doing it. Sharing with a bunch of drunk guys in a college dorm is enough for me, thanks.

dovima Feb 24th, 2005 03:25 PM

Sorry, can't do it.
Shared enough with family. If the yuck factor is there with siblings, imagine how it feels with complete strangers....
At any rate, one of the reasons I travel is to enjoy my privacy!

Okay, I'll admit it. I'm a budget traveler. I've done it and only had a couple of not-so-pleasant experiences -- namely, bad housekeeping by the hotel.

By the way, what do people who refuse to ever share facilities do when they're at work, school, or the gym? Wait until they get home?

sandy_b Feb 24th, 2005 03:32 PM

I've shared the bathroom at about 5-6 times and never had a bad experience. The bathrooms were always big, clean, I never had to wait.

I'd rather have the bathroom inside my room but so far (knock on wood), it's not been a problem.

Having the bathroom down the hall is not a big deal for me, especially when it saves me $15-$25 a night on my room. That's dinner at a nice restaurant! Heck, I use public toilets, so what's the big deal about a bathroom down the hall shared by half a dozen people?

Seamus Feb 24th, 2005 05:33 PM

Have doen this twice - once out of desperation (only room left in the city, it seemed) in Florence and it turned out to be fine. Had a sink, tilet and bidet in the room, just had to go a few doors down to the shower, which was clean. The second time was in a Madrid hostal, and it was OK, too, but given the choice I take en suite facilities every time.

In the early '70's when my friend and I were living in France, we hitch hiked up to Paris (you could do that then!) to see Traffic (go Stevie Winwood!) play. We stayed at the Hotel Danube on rue Vavin (it has since COMPLETELY changed!), where the WCs were located adjacent to a circular stairway, with doors that swung OUT onto the stairs. The toilet itself was clean, but trying to leave the WC in the middle of the night, when you're somewhat disoriented and not being able to find the step was something else. Location is KEY.

KT...work and school you have no choice. However, when I book a room I do have choice so I take the ensuite bathroom always!

I can't imagine sharing a bathroom when I have the means to reserve a room without sharing.

To each his own.

using the locker room by the swimming pool is bad enough--athlete's foot is not fun.
