Seville to Lisbon by bus or train
 

Checked airfares and they are very high to Lisbon, either from Madrid or Seville. Our options seem to be train or bus, unless I hear of other options from this wonderful forum.

Have you done this trip by bus or train? Could you please share your experience?

From Sevilla: There's a Viajes Julia bus (DBA Eurolines) from Malaga to Lisbon via Cadiz, Sevilla. When I took it, it departed Sevilla around 12:30. I made a reservation by e-mail & bought my ticket at Sevilla's Plaza de Armas bus terminal. http://www.eurolines.es

It's about a 9-hour ride (including a 1-hour meal stop around 13:30). It came via Setubal, past Almada (Cristo Rey) & across the 25 Abril bridge to the Bus station on Joao Crisostomo. The view of Belem from the bridge was awesome! That was a few years ago - now it might go to the Oriente Transportation Center.

It got to Lisbon about 21:30 (PT) and I walked to my residencial: Estrelha do Saldanha, Avda. de la Republica, 17.

There are no direct rail links. But if you want to go to Madrid (2 hrs) and then take the overnight train to Lisbon, you'll be there in the morning. Or you can take a bus from Seville to Faro and train up from there. So the direct bus is probably the best and no dodubt cheapest link.

Could you tell me more about it? How long from Seville to Faro? Then is it easy to catch the train in Faro to Lisbon? Where is the train stop in Lisbon? Any other details, maybe cost, will be very welcome.

Elvira: I neglected to mention that the Eurolines bus Malaga-Lisbon just operates 3-4 days weekly in off-season.

It's not how long it is Sevilla-Faro; it's how frequently the buses operate, especially in 'off season.' Damas SA is the principal operator of bus service between Sevilla & Huelva. They had 2-daily departures Huelva-Faro (09:00 and 18:00).

There are more frequent buses from Seilla to Ayamonte which is on the eastern side of the River Guadiana. There is a ferry across the river as well as local buses over a bridge in the daytime, or it's a short taxi ride (I was charged 12 euros, I seem to remember). From Vila Real, on the other side of the river in Portugal, there are trains and buses via Faro to Lisboa. The journey will take most of a day, but is interesting, using a variety of forms of transport, and with lots of breaks for drinks and snacks on the way.

You might want to consider taking the train to Madrid and flying Europe by Air from Madrid to Lisbon. We did this last May and the cost was $99 plus airport tax. The train from Seville to Madrid does not cost that much. We loved both Seville and Lisbon is great! Enjoy your trip. (europebyair.com)
