Seville to Granada in a Day?

Is it possible to visit Granada in a day, coming from Seville. We are considering using Seville as a base and would prefer not having to move to a different hotel. What is the best transportation mode, how long does it take, what does it cost, and how do we make reservations? Thanks

Everyone has their own travel style, and I would not choose to do what you propose to do. Looking on www.euroshell.com for Seville-Granada, the routing shows 244 km and an advised driving time of 3 hr 38 mins. You can drive fast in Spain, so I would not have thought it would take this long, but I have learned better than to dispute euroshell's driving times. But then, on the other hand, the fact that you are asking about "reservations" for this travel makes me think you are not inclined towards having a car.

I think you SHOULD move - - where are you headed next? or where will you have been coming from before Sevilla?

About 4 years ago, I did a (too fast) swing through southern Spain (I'd love to do it again more leisurely), and these ARE do-able distances (with very long days):

Lisbon-Sevilla; arrive by early afternoon; spend 3-4 hours and move onward to Marbella, arriving well into the night.

Marbella-Ronda; arrive before noon; spent about 2 hours (basically, an early lunch and a quick walk through the town); onward to Granada for about 3 hours at the Alhambra and press onward to Benidorm (again, this was an evening arrival, yet still before they eat dinner in Spain, as I recall).

From Benidorm, after a lazy morning at the beach, headed northward on to Barcelona.

I realize that you are more likely moving north-south through this region rather than east-west, but I think maybe you ought to pick an ambitious target ON PAST Granada and then make Granada your mid-day stop on your way to somewhere else. I find it worthwhile to do 2-4 hours driving in the time window 6-11 p.m., especially in the summer (only once or twice a week if you want to keep your trip more sane). But as I said at the beginning, there are many different travel "styles".

Best wishes,

Rex

We drove from Seville to Granada and it took about 4 hours. Even if you could cut the time by train (not sure if that is possible or not), it wouldn't leave enough time to enjoy Granada, which I thought was wonderful. I thought it had more atmosphere than Seville. So my advice would be to spend at least one night in Granada.

Bob,

Granada deserves at least one full day AND you may not be able to get into the Alhambra if you only allot an afternoon.
You wouldn't want that to happen.
Last year I did this travel by train, and it costed exactly 2325 pesetas (one-way). It takes about 4 hours in a quite pictoresque journey (it was not one of the fastest trains). For timetables and fares, try http://www.renfe.es (en espaņol...).
As I left Sevilla early in the morning (8:15 am), I arrived at Granada around noon, and had the whole afternoon to visit the city centre. I reserved the next day to go to Alhambra, undoubtedly the biggest atraction. I do agree with Ruth: if you want to visit Granada, consider staying there for at least one night. By the way, don't miss Cordoba !

Sorry, I've just noticed that the Renfe site has an english version: http://www.renfe.es/ingles/index.html

Remember you can make a reservation at the Alhambra ahead of time from outside Spain.
