Seville Flamenco
 

We will be in Seville in July. Where would be the best place to go to watch flamenco? Casa de Memoria sounds interesting, but I read that it is outside and can get very hot in the summer.

We visited Los Gallos - http://www.tablaolosgallos.com. Fantastic show. Is it authentic? I don't know, I'm not a flamenco expert. But there was no castanets from memory :)

Los Gallos is very much authentic even though it's oriented towards tourists (and castañetas need not be bad, an important part of the tradition even though it's often used excessively in more touristy shows). I see that fabulous Rosario Toledo dances at Los Gallos at the moment, she's in the top league. We invited her to the Oslo opera a couple of years ago to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Norwegian flamenco club. Sold out weeks in advance and a huge success. But intimate Casa de la Memória is also a great option. They recently moved to Calle Cuna, 6 in the very center of town. It's not outside, even though the new venue also might be in a kind of an open air patio.

This is also the real deal, and perhaps even more so than Los Gallos. No drinks, no food, just flamenco. 15€ entrance, much more affordable than the top tablaos (flamenco restaurants) such as Los Gallos. Pastora Galván from Sevilla was voted best female flamenco dancer 2010 by Spanish critics, and she performs in Casa de la memoria approx once a week during large parts of the year.

Can you buy tickets to Casa de la Memoria in advance from the US? I don't see a way to do that, and information doesn't seem to be listed on its website for July. Is it difficult to get tickets once we are there? I think that the problems with the heat were mentioned about a patio, but the intimate setting does seem very appealing.

They used to sell tickets only one day in advance, but I see they now can be contacted for reservations both on phone and e-mail:

I would suggest to wait to make the reservations until you see the July programme. All artists here are top shelf, but Pastora Galván is somthing very special. Brought up in the purest tradition in a famous flamenco family from Sevilla, but at the same time she's avant garde and cutting edge. And as said, voted best female flamenco dancer 2010 by Spanish critics.

Casa de la Memoria has posted its July schedule. I don't think that the names you have mentioned are dancing. Do you have a recommendation among the nights of July 11, 12, 13? July 12 might be difficult to fit in our schedule. Thanks

Great artists every night, but I think I would have chosen July 11 ("Duende"). Rafael Campallo is one of the finest male dancers, and he's accompanied by Marina Valiente who used to dance in his compañía. She was no. 2 in the prestigious national flamenco dance competition "La Perla de Cádiz" in 2011.

Hope you don't mind the question - are there any age restrictions on the shows? Will be in Seville in May of next year with our 17 year old and would like to see a flamenco show.

Kids of all ages at local flamenco events, but there are often some age restrictions at about six years in theaters. 17 is not an issue.
