Seville: Churches and Convent
 

I would like to devote a half day to visiting impressive churches and convents, and buying Convent Sweets. Focus would be on art, history, achitecture and photo ops. Appeciate feedback on "must see" locations and on procedures for buying the sweets.

Take a look at exploreseville.com/sites.htm. It has some of the best information on the city.

Even devoting an entire day will not allow you to cover much ground. The Catedral can easily consume a few hours if you actually want to see it. The Reales Alcazares, another few hours. And then there is lunch (allow enough time to enjoy your meal). Sevillanos are seldom in a hurry at lunch time.

One problem you will encounter is many convents and some churches have restricted opening/visiting hours, and often just for the Mass, which can be at 7 am or 7 pm. I think the most reliable listing of opening hours is on the Archdiocese of Seville website, at

The chapel in the Hospital de la Caridad might give you the ultimate Sevilla experience. As Sevilla as it gets even though it's not on many tourists route. The 17th century repenting benefactor/co-founder Miguel de Mañara was - according to himself - and previous to his 'awakening', "the most evil man that ever lived". All the paintings he commisioned from some of the most famous golden-age arists (Murillo, Valdés Leal, Zurbarán etc.) for the hospital and its adjoining church dealt with the theme of death and redemption. The hospital, the church, the paintings and Mañara's grave are all in Calle Temprado, 3 close to the Maestranza theater and the Torre del Oro.
