Thanks for the tip indyhiker, even tho it's pricier, it's good to have a back up!

If you figure it out, let us know. I'll be in your shoes in December or so and am bracing myself for Renfre's notoriously cranky site.

I really hope The Man in Seat 61 chimes in because even Captain Train's website insists there are no addition fees, surcharges or expenses and that they offer the same prices if you bought directly. So I'm confused, too.

Indyhiker - FYI, I just booked through RailEurope. It was a 13.50 fee total - but worth it to do it in English and on a site that works!

That said - with Renfre, I think I figured out what the problem was...I was booking an outbound as a "mesa" (table) rate, and the return train didnt offer that fare. But when I clicked on a drop down menu and chose a slightly higher fare, it allowed me to book. But rather than giving an error message I had to spend the last two days trying everything I could think of...at least that's what I think was the issue.

In the end, I went with Rail Europe because it was the same price (except for the 13.50 fee, but between three of us, not a big deal) and the site is so much easier to work with. Even on the "english" site of Renfre, half is written in Spanish. So I was afraid I would miss something important.

Good luck with your trip in December!
