What to do in Sete? Excursion to Carcassone, Montpellier and the Flaugergues Castle or Aigues Mortes?

Carcasonne is about 1/2 hours away, that would be my choice.

I assume you have a car, so I would check the website for C.

No cars allowed in the old town. I don't remember where parking was.

Thank you. We will be there on a Sunday. AutoEurope is telling me I will not find a location open on a Sunday? I tried googling it but it is difficult to find info on this area. The ship is charging $139.00 per person just for the transfer.

Where is your ship docking? How long will you be in Sete, just a day?

It is really hard to get info from the ship on Sete. Not sure where it is docking. We will be there just a day. I got this off the internet - Ships dock a couple of short blocks and across a small canal from downtown. The entire city is within easy walk of the pier.

What is the closest rental car company from the small canal?

I've been to Sète many times, but always arrived and departed in a rental car I'd picked up elsewhere. There's no such thing as "the small canal." There are several. At any rate, it's unlikely there are rental car companies in the central canal area. I'm guessing they are on the Avenue Gilbert Martel or over in the new town.

Actually, whatever affiliate AutoEurope uses in Sète has offices at 3 Quai du Pavois d'Or, which is on the biggest of the canals. Whether it's open Sundays, I have no idea, but you could contact AE.

Or you can just visit Sète, which I found very pleasant.

If you like the French Singer , Georges Brassens, there's
a museum about him in Sete.

Sete is interesting, a real French (as in not foreign touristy) holiday place. Or you could join the German naturists at Agde. It may have been a bad day, but I felt that Carcassone had too much resemblance to Disneyland.

I've visited Sète and the three possible ship excursion destinations and I would choose to visit Aigues-Mortes and get a look at the Camargue region. Since it's only probably an hour or so from Sète, you might even have time to explore Sète a little too. Like others here, I found Sète pleasant and interesting, especially the working waterfront area along one of the large canals.

Montpellier is a nice city, but I'm not sure it offers much for a short visit. (I'm not familiar with the chateau visited on this tour.)

As for Carcassonne, I'm not sure what I would do for more than a couple of hours there. I kind of agree with tarquin about it. And it's the farthest from Sète, so you would spend more time on a bus.

One thing to be aware of that could affect your choices is that during some months mosquitos can be terrible in the Camargue.

Thanks. We are going in September. I have been told that Carcassone is actually 2 hours a way so that is not very appealing. The problem with Sete is that we are in there on a Sunday and most shops are closed.

I did not do any shopping in Sète and I liked it anyway. Would you be doing shopping in the other place you want to visit? It will be Sunday everywhere.
