Hi Magnolia,

Saint-Emilion is great. If you have a car, I would forgo a guide. Booking tours with wineries is easy and many are walking distance from the town. Some of my favourite restaurants were La Terrace Rouge and Chai Pascal. Chateau Franc Mayne and Chateau Canon La Gaffeliere are good winery visit experiences.

I would recommend that you visit this website: https://sauvistication.com It will teach you how to navigate Bordeaux. Check the planning page for itineraries for Saint-Emilion.

Hi there! We live just outside of St. Émilion. The town, itself, has so many good restaurants that any one you pick you are most likely going to have a good meal. If you want to experience a meal where the locals and winemakers eat, I'd make reservations at La Table de Catusseau (Pomerol) or at Caffé Cuisine (Branne). September is a fun time to be in town as the harvest (les vendanges) is just finishing up. With 4 nights, you'll easily be able to see everything (the town is quite small.) Visiting wineries is super easy but you should book ahead. Château Guadet is in town and a great little, family run, winery. If you're interested in a tour, Rustic Vines is great and they have an office in St. Émilion as well as Bordeaux. We've done bike tours and private van tours with them. Always a great selection of wineries. And it's always a good idea to have a driver who is not drinking. ;-)
We have also driven from there to Avignon. It takes between 6-7 hours with some potty stops along the auto route. Be mindful of the speed cameras (they are everywhere!) But it is an easy drive and I would suggest you drive vs. fly as your timing would be similar. I would not say Avignon is the "tuscany" feel but we enjoyed it. St. Remy may be a better fit for the experience you are trying to achieve.
Enjoy your trip!
