September: Sardinia or Cyclades

Hi
I am trying to decide on best destination for the first two weeks in September, and can't decide between Sardinia&Rome or the Cyclades (Naxos/Paros/Santorini). I think Sardinia may be very quiet in September, and I'd like somewhere that is reasonably lively (restaurants/bars etc). I'd also like somewhere with nice beaches, and think sardinia may be better for this... The disadvantage of the cyclades is the amount of travel to get there (3 flights each way)...

Any advice??? I just cant decide!

Went to north coast Sardinia at start of 3rd week of September - dead in lots of places. Smaller resort towns on Costa Esmeralda were literally all shutting up that week. The small beaches are very pretty and water quality great - but with the strong winds, the water had become uncomfortably cool for swimming. I found Sardinia tourist locations a bit of a rip off for eating and hotels. Lots of tourist areas as Patrick once said are a bit like Florida. Thought the Greek islands had more character and much better value.

Thanks for your reply, it is very helpful to get a response, because we have agonised over this. We have been to Italy and Greece before but just didnt know what to make of Sardinia. Is Naxos/Paros/Santorini a good choice for a 2 week holiday?

The Costa Smeralda is LEAST representative of Sardinia. I recently travelled on the island for two weeks, avoided the Cost Smeralda (which I had seen years ago), and enjoyed the stay immensely. You really have to know WHERE to go when travelling in Sardinia.

GAC, Hi, I used to post here as kk and appreciated all your help with my last trip to Europe. I am planning another one now, and just returned to this site. Any Sardinia advice would be greatly appreciated.
