September in Italy
My wife and I are planning a trip Italy in September. In the past we have always visited Italy in the Spring. We thought it would be great to visit in the early Fall. We would appreciate any comments on the weather during September. We are very flexible about when we go in September or even October. Our planned destinations are Como, Piemonte, and Firenze. Thanks!

Lake Como should be done first as things start shutting down in the fall. The weather will be perfect in Italy in the fall, especially with less rain.

We will be traveling to Italy on September 8-starting with the Lakes region. Our last 3 trips have been in September, we find the weather quite pleasant that time of year and the landscapes to die for! We haven't run in to much rain or unbearable heat. It's easy to layer the clothing if it gets chilly at the days end as autumn days do. And, you can get a really good nights sleep when it cools off in the evening. 42 days and counting! Shirley

Hi JRM...I am the opposite. I have always traveled in the fall and very much enjoy it. This year we decided to travel in the spring in order to see the wild flowers. I loved Tuscany in the Spring but preferred Rome in the fall. It was too hot and crowded. There are usually less crowds in the fall. I usually go around the 3rd week in September when the weather is still warm but not hot.

I read my response and thought perhaps I should clarify that I think September is a great time to travel to Firenze as well...less crowds and heat.

We went to Lake Como and Lake Maggiore the last two weeks in October, 2004, and had lots (6 days out of 8) of wet weather. Several hotels, restaurants, sites of interest were already closed especially on Maggiore
Have been several times in mid-September- early October and weather was perfect and crowds were thinned out We are going to Chianti in mid-September this year and are expecting good weather. You can get weather history free at www.wunderground.com by searching city. Enjoy your trip. |
Cgibson, you will love Chianti in mid-September! We were there a few years ago that time of year and it was wonderful! See our trip report for that marvy trip

For what it's worth...
We spent the first three weeks of September there last year. We were quite surprised (and dismayed) to find the Tuscan hills as brown as they were - having already been tilled. We wished we'd gone in the Spring for that reason. We were in Florence on the 14th and the main tourist sites were MOBBED and so we left. |
