I personally would have the extra night at home. Some people can go back to work the next day after traveling home from Europe, but I'm definitely not one of those people. It takes me four or five days to recover completely. I usually plan our vacations so that we have at least 2 nights at home before going back to work, and I usually spend the days relaxing, doing laundry, playing with our cats (we are cat people too!), etc. and that time is usually much needed.

Otherwise, I think your itinerary looks great. The only thing I would change is perhaps adding an extra night or two in Rome.

Thanks everyone - more wonderful info.

I'm glad Bob the Navigator likes this itinerary. I respect his opinion and that means we're "good to go"!

Also, I thought about adding a day or so in Rome, but I was "just there" 6 years ago and truly did everything I wanted to except I missed the Pantheon, which I'll do on this trip. My wife wants to see "some stuff" so I'm merely accomodating her interests here. She only really wants to see a few of the highlights and I had no interest in going back to Rome but I gladly will for her .

Yeah, getting home on Sat instead of Sunday is starting to sound like a great idea! A day of rest is needed after 3 swirling weeks away.

Lastly, excellent info on the exchange rate "rip off". I'll be SURE to check each receipt from the hotels and demand euros and not US dollars.
