Semi-Backpacker Luggage Help

I am going to Italy in October for 15 days by myself via train and I'm trying to figure out the best option for light luggage. I'm spending 3 days in Venice, 3 in CT, 2 in Florence, 2 in Assisi, and 5 in Rome. I figure I will probably need a backpack for the hiking in CT and around Assisi...but it seems a prime target for pickpockets in the cities! I have a 15x11 khaki messenger bag that fits my laptop, but that also does not seem practical when out sightseeing in cities. I have a standard roller suitcase but am now worried that it's a couple inches too large for European inter-country flights (I have to connect on Iberia from Madrid). I know a lot of people carry all their stuff in a massive backpacker backpack...but that just seems silly to me. Do you guys have any ideas for efficient luggage?

Look at Rick Steves website for well thought out, light weight luggage and backpack choices.
