Self tour of WWII sites with my Son

Need assistance planning a minimum 2 week trip from states to see as many sites regarding WW II. Best to fly into Paris or London? Too expensive to book the "Band of Brothers" tour. Thank you in advance.

Caen to Bastogne is about a 6 hour drive and Luxembourg is not that far to do on a day trip. We have done all on our own. We did fly into Paris and went to Bayeux where we stayed for three nights. You can take a train to Caen and rent a car there. Very easy to drive and see everything on your own. I like going at my own pace and there were things that were repetitive so skipped some of the museums.
We did Battle of the Bulge on a trip to Frankfurt so rented a car and stayed in Bastogne at the Best Western http://www.hotel-melba.eu/en/ It was like a museum with all the pictures and many American tourist that had a wealth of info. My Dad fought there so we had researched where we wanted to go and did it on our own. You will run into many Band of Brothers stuff along the way but my Dad was in the 509th Airborne and they fought at Sadzot so that was where we went. Everything is well marked.

Berchtesgaden is very interesting and the town is beautiful. If you have time I would visit.

"Too expensive to book the "Band of Brothers" tour." Okay, but being the best way to experience Omaha Beach and the adjoining Normandy sites is with someone who actually knows what's going on, you can do it on your own, but it won't be the same. If you're traveling that far...

I've been to Omaha Beach three time over the last 30 years or so, but the best experience we had was a couple of years ago with Overloard Tours.

I disagree, we did fine and saw everything we wanted to see. It is really mapped out well for you and so much info on the internet. I had read the book on my Dad's unit and it was very much on target, more so than anyone in the area even knew. I could not find anyone that even knew where Sadzot was. It was a big battle so what does that tell you about the local guides? They zone in on their tourist site and forget other areas. Normandy was very easy to navigate and all the museum's explain everything. I so loved the American cemetery and visiting the beach with my husband gathering sand in little tubes for a man that landed there. He loved that I brought him back sand from the beach. We took some ashes of a friend and left at the Navy statue and beach. If you have any questions ask as many here have been. Go and do it on your budget, just do it with your son while you can.

My Dad also fought at Anzio in Italy and one day hope to go there.
