Self-guided walking tours in Paris

I know I have seen some great itineraries on the board in the past. (Perhaps from Kerouac???). For the life of me I can't find any - can folks point me to afew?

seafox - The ones I have followed on 2 occassions have been posted by Degas. Put his/her name in the search box and you should come across all of them.
Now, having said that let me give you some great books that can allow one to do a self-guided tour.

I always take the 3 books called 'Around & About Paris' by Thirza Valois. Great and interesting detail about each area as well as a little map. They come in Vol.1, 2 & 3.

Then, I recently acquired 'History & Mystery' by Peter Caine.
I also bought his London one.
It has 24 walking tours with maps in colour. Not a big heavy book either!

Here's one of Kerouac's walks. Once you've opened it you can click on his screen name and see all his posts.

There are also other walks by Degas which are good. Again click on his name to see all his posts.

In addition to the excellent Thirza Valois books, I like "Walking Paris" by Gilles Desmons. The latter might be better for a first-timer.

Yes, I forgot about the wonderful 'Ethnic Walk' by KEROUAC that we did last year! We started at the end, which is Sacre Coeur - the beginning is Gare de Nord station.

A second to Stu Dudley's recommendation of "Walking Paris," which I am delightedly working my way through whenever we get to the City of Lights.

I used Daytrips France" (ISBN 0-8038-2006-2) and "Michelin Paris" (ISBN 2-06-712335-1).

My son did a free guided walking tour in January, just tipped the guide later (his choice). Does anyone know the name of these

aussie_10 - there's the Paris Greeter service which you need to book in advance.

And New Paris Tours (just show up). I recently recommended this tour to someone and she raved about it. She and her husband liked the tour so much that they gave the guide a big tip.

There's also a free tour of Notre Dame (1.5 to 2 hours) Wednesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 and Saturdays at 2:30. Given by volunteers. Meet inside the church under the clock or ask at the information booth to the right of the entrance.

If you're willing to pay a small amount the Paris Walks folks give a variety of excellent walking tours - duration 2 hours.
