Self Drive tour?

Several years ago, we took a self-drive tour of Ireland from Brendon Tours. They provided a rental car and a book of vouchers for B&Bs and a book listing participating B&Bs. We just called whatever accommodations we were interested in the day before we would arrive. Worked out great for us.

We have friends who want to do the same thing this year. Looking on Brendon's website, I can't find the same option. Did I miss it? Does anyone know a reputable tour company offering the same arrangement?

Greatly appreciate all your help.

There are - but we generally don't recommend the voucher schemes. They do not guarantee accommodations but merely that IF you find a place and IF there is a vacancy, then it is paid for. Most B&B owners don't like the system since there is a lag in receiving payment. They'd rather rent for cash on the barrel head.

The vouchers really don't benefit the traveler either - except for firming up costs/expenses in advance. But there will be lots of places one might not find a room covered by the vouchers.

Just have them book a car and rooms separately . . .

Vouchers are a marketing tool, if you have a B&B miles from anywhere or a less popular central B&B then you might join the scheme. The other 90%+ B&B's in Ireland rely on reputation, repeat business and normal advertising methods. A €45 voucher will generally buy you a €30 room. and the Agent who sold you the voucher a really expensive coffee.

Of course when you are spoiled for choice on the 10000's accommodation front in Ireland, narrowing the options to a couple of Hundred makes life easier for some.

Thanks for the responses. We had a good experience with it, but that was in 2001. We haven't done that since, going mostly on the fly--DH's preferred method
