Self drive London Cornwall return May

We are going to spend a few days in Cornwall (Ancestral home) after returning from a tour of Europe. We don't want to drive through London to commence journey and were looking for recommendations where to pick up a car on the outskirts and return there or maybe Heathrow

Near London the very easiest place to collect a car would be LHR. But . . . Where are you starting the UK portion of your trip? Are you staying any time in London before heading to Cornwall? If so I'd seriously consider taking the train down to Cornwall, rent a car there and then depending on the rest of your itinerary either train back to London or drive back and drop the car

But before we can give you the best advice we need to know more - are you arriving at one of the London airports or ferry ports or at St Pancras on Eurostar - which is it? And what are your plans after Cornwall?

That would determine the best places to collect/drop a car.

Where in Cornwall? To give you an idea, LHR to say Penzance is a six hour drive at best. And when is this trip? Winter weather or summer crowds could greatly increase the drive time.

But as I asked - please fill in the blanks. You are arriving on the Eurostar and don't know whether to spend a night in London - OK. But do you just mean to travel to Cornwall and back to the airport -- or do you have other plans after Cornwall.?

The more info we have to work with the easier it is to help . . .

Re train fares - the cheapest fares sell out first - but there are other ways to save like the 'Two Travel Together' or Senior railcards.

(depending on where you will be on the Continent, it might have been better to fly in to Newquay rather than taking the train to London if you don't want to visit London)
