Self Catering Accommodation, Isle of Harris

We're loking to spend two weeks on the Isle of Harris, Western Isles of Scotland, in July 2012, looking for a self catering cottage for two adults.

All the web sites I've checked so far have places that look good but very expensive, mostly around GBP700 per week.

Similar places on Orkney seem to be available for around GBP200 per week less so it can't just be the remoteness that makes Harris so dear.

Can anyone recommend good self catering on Harris at a more reasonable price?

Here are a few to check out.

I've found rates on Lewis/Harris and especially on Harrisare often higher than comparable cottages on Skye or the mainland. Not sure why.

With the population of a modest block of council flats and a surface area bigger than Greater London (pop:+/- 8 million), it's safe to assume that every single owner of any house to rent on Harris can comfortably fit into the snug (if such a concept is allowed) of any Harris pub. Except on Sundays, of course - and only if there is such a place. My own memory is that the thirsty need to get a bus to Lewis.

Pub or someone's back parlour: safe from prying ears, might it just be possible that a few nods, winks and drams are exchanged to ensure no-one drags any of those ungodly Mainland practices - like price competition - onto the island?

But you're right- they do seem dear. Options, of course, are limited.
