Which is better Candido Restaurant or Jose Maria?

Locals prefer Jose Maria

Candido was the good one in the old days, then Jose Maria took the lead and lately I understand that Candido was again doing a very good job.
So you choose.

You might look at Fodor's or Frommer's online sites to see what they have to say.

You might find something even better.

Thanks, Ana Maria! How are you feeling? You know the food on that trip was so spectacular that I get hungry every time I think or read about it! I would love to go back someday soon!

Hmm...... Let me put in a plug for Candido having eaten there less than ten days ago. I do not have ek's ability to articulate the effect of food on my senses (I actually stopped jotting down exactly what the heck I was eating in my journal so I could enjoy it and the surroundings instead of just writing about it to remember later) but believe me, I can discern great food nonetheless! I also loved the fanfare of cutting the pig with a plate, and was there with a party of ten (six spaniards), ALL of whom agreed with me about the quality of the food. I suggest you consider visiting their website http://www.mesondecandido.es/ingles.html. Just make sure to take a reservation, try cochinillo (spelling? the baby pig that came complete with rows of little teeth), and, if possible, sit on the first floor with a view of the aquaduct to add to the experience. When you finish, consider having a cigar handy (there is a tobacco shop around the corner where I got mine :) ) and sit on the steps to soak in the history and the views of this beautiful, historic city :)

Ekscrunchy I am much better thanks for asking . The countdown continues...now 18 days until Madrid and then the Lechazo Trail! After my delay in March, I am still aprehensive about believing it. Looks like I missed alot of rain. I have had the table on the balcony @ Yantar reserved since March!

Comfy sounds great good to know about the Cigars too for DH. Don't fret none of us will every hold a candle to that original post of La Crunchita's she has a talent!.

I've being to both; Jose Maria, hands down. It is true that you ought to go into Candido's as the institution it is, but I found Jose Maria to be more authentic, much better service, much better wine selection and better food. Candido's feels more touristy, with pictures of celebrities who have vsited plastered all over the walls and it is fun to visit, but again, the service was very not great and the food was bland.

I am a Jose Maria guy as well. Another that is off the tourist trail and really my favorite is Posada de Javier which is in a small town about 3 miles north of Segovia [really a a suburb] [can't recall -maybe Torre de Caballero?]. It's right on the road on the right as you go north out of town. 1600's converted barn. Leisurely and sort of elegant casual.

If you have a car I would urge you to drive to Sepulveda and have lunch at Tinin. It is about a 45 minute drive for a meal that ranks among my all-time favorites.

Double ditto for Tinin in Sepulveda! Truly worth the drive. there used to be two Tinin's in Sepulveda: El Mejor and El Minor [father and son]. You want El Mejor which under the covered walkway.

I was there for lunch one cold March day. It was a slow day and I had a cuple of hours getting cooking lessons, igloo oven explanations etc. The topper was when after I had left, he came running after me to give me a "Tinin" ashtray. One of the most memorable meals and visits I have had anywhere.

BTW eskrunchy: Did you locate it through Penelope Casas?

ekscrunchy I thought you said El Yantar was better? Did I misunderstand?

I did like El Yantar better but Tinin was close behind. I thought that Sepulveda was closer to Segovia that is why I recommended it. Also El Yantar is not open every day. I think I did first read about it in Penelope Casas wonderful guide.

We will be going to El Yantar for lunch (direct from Madrid) then going to Segovia .
