Segovia day trip

Hi Everyone! Quick question about our day trip from Madrid to Segovia. I'm getting ready to book the train tickets for this portion of our trip. First, do you feel it is necessary to book these now or just purchase the same day? Our day trip will be Oct 26. If you do feel we should book ahead how much time should I allow in Segovia? I thought to leave Madrid around 9 am and return at 8pm. Is this too long? I would like to have dinner in Segovia and walk around in the evening, which in Oct will be earlier. It would be easier to play it by ear but don't want to chance not getting an outbound ticket or not getting the return ticket we want and having to wait hours for the next available train. Thanks for your input, Michele

"I thought to leave Madrid around 9 am and return at 8pm. Is this too long? "

IMO, no -- I thought it worth even longer! :-) But it should be enough for a nice visit. Do consider trying Segovia's amazing roast suckling pig.

<Do consider trying Segovia's amazing roast suckling pig>

That is why I wanted to be sure to stay for dinner. Thank you!

Then you'll what to check out José Maria (www.restaurantejosemaria.com) and Mason de Cándido (www.mesondecandido.es).

If you wish to leave at 8pm you'll miss dinner. Lunch perhaps?

We had the suckling pig at josse maria yesterday. The full meal deal takes around three hours so lunch might be a safer option for you.

I was hoping to eat around seven, and then walk around a bit, as the last train leaves at 9:30.

Thank you Robert for the restaurant recs. I will put them in my paperwork. We will check out the times when we arrive and then decide lunch or dinner. Maybe big lunch and something light for dinner so we can still walk around at night.

Immimi, Three hours! Wow. Did you visit Segovia as a day trip? Did you feel you had enough time to visit the town and have a three hour lunch, or was it too cramped time wise?

I ate at both the restaurants recommended here. You will need reservations as they both fill up.

I stayed in Segovia for 2 nights. A day trip would not have been enough for me.

I spent all day there, probably left Madrid around 9 and returned late afternoon, but I didn't have any dinner there.

joannyc,
Did you have a preference on the restaurants? I will make a restaurant reservation upon our arrival in the morning. Do you know if they serve the suckling pig for lunch and dinner?

Christina, I was planning to leave Madrid around 9am also, but really wanted to see Segovia at night. Did you make reservations ahead for the train or just wing it?

Revulgo, That map is great! Is there a way I can save it to view it on my Ipad Mini while we are in Segovia for the day, say in pdf format?

VolCrew Sep 26th, 2015 02:40 PM

That's about the amount of time I was there, but I am not interested in having a 3 hour meal.

Robert2533 Sep 26th, 2015 07:56 PM

I guess it dosen't take that long to wolf down a slab of BBQ, but a 2 to 3 hour lunch in Spain isn't that unusual. One has to learn how to enjoy life.

just a day trip - lovely little city and we probably didn't do it justice but that was our time frame and the foodies in our group 'needed' the pigginess thing.

Great wine from their own vineyards, btw. And the olive oil - oy!

Michele_d,
When you pull the map up (or any pages of it) while it is up, take a photo and you can pull up the photos when you are in Segovia, even if you do not have wifi access.

I always take the bus at about 9 AM to Segovia- much easier!

michele_d Sep 27th, 2015 08:51 AM

chapla...why is it easier? I have heard that but still haven't decided which way, train or bus.
