need itinerary help : Lk Como, Lugano, C/T 2 to 3 weeks

I am just starting to plan out next trip. April/May next year. About 2/3 weeks. Landing in Milan. Not staying. Want to do Lake Como, Lake Lugano and Cinque Terre. We are active seniors and have travelled extensively.

Would appreciate suggested itineraries. We prefer to stay in a small town as a base. We like boutique hotels with charm and character, up to maybe $250/night. We will probably take trains. Open to all suggestions.

For train info go to www.trenitalia.com - Italian State Railways official site for schedules and prices - many trains in Italy demand seat reservations before boarding but regional trains like you may take between Milan and the CT do not and there is no reason to buy those tickets in advance - same price once there and always can clamor aboard. IC trains can be booked but there is little savings usually but high-speed trains do offer discount tickets but those are non-changeable non-refundble - you are really traveling very little distances on trains in Italy and mainly on regional and IC trains so just buy your tickets once in Italy unless you are planning to take high-speed trains like between Milan and Florence or Florence and Rome - then you may want to book in advance - way in advance to nab fares as low as 9 euros - for lots of great info on Italian trains I always spotlight these superb IMO sites - www.seat61.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

You could go first to Lugano
then train back to Como
The train via Milan and Genoa to Cinque Terre - most would find 2-3 weeks way too long for just those three places - you could easily visit Florence or Venice or end up in Rome to fly out of there - flying into Milan (or even Zurich) makes sense for Lugano and Como.

Your exposure is the time of year---you will be early for those destinations. You could easily have temps in the low 40s at the lakes and rain on the coast. Can you make it later?

5 days in Cinque Terre? That's one day for each tiny village overrun with tourists?

Ok galiano - no in spring it will not be overrun so I missed the mark on that thinking you were going this summer. Sorry but I still wonder with all the trails supposedly closed but one between the villages what will you do? Spend one day in each tiny village - a sincere question - now you could use the CT as a base to visit Portofino, etc.
