Seeking Orvieto hotel / B&B recs

Planning to stop for a night in Orvieto in route from the AC to Tuscany in mid-September. I'm having a hard time locating a place to stay. We'll be taking the train into town and renting a car the following day to tour the countryside, so we're looking for a location in town that is walking distance to some restaurants. I would love to keep price under 120E. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi annief,

We really liked the Palaazo Piccolomini****. Stayed 3 nights, but it was in 2000, so prices are probably significantly higher now.

Orvieto is easily walkable everywhere. Lots of excellent restaurants.

Be sure to do the underground tour!

annief,

We are staying for two nights next month at Hotel Corso.

http://www.hotelcorso.net/eng/default.htm

The location seems fine, and the reviews are pretty good.

Rates are 89 E plus 6 E for breakfast.

I'll let you know what we think when we get home late next month.

We've just made reservations for a single September day at La Magnolia B&B in the center of town on Via del Duomo which is, well, a block away from the Duomo. There are numerous eateries there of course. For a double room with bath the price if 65 Euros, breakfast included.

We looked at the above-mentioned Corso too -- if you know the layout of Orvieto you'll note it is closer to the funicular, yet further from the core of the city. La Magnolia is opposite. Since we're also walking from the train station/funicular with only one bag each, we opted to be in the direct center (but if you have many bags....Corso might be better). Six of one, half a dozen of the other, really.

Here's La Magnolia's website should you care to research their property:

Enjoy your trip!

We did exactly the same thing - took the train to Orvieto, then picked up a car the next day and drove around Tuscany.

We stayed at the Hotel Virgilio for €80, it's right next to the Duomo and you can request a room with a view of the Duomo. It's clean but not at all fancy, very centrally located.

Once you get off the funicular there's a bus that takes you to the Duomo, I think it's included in the cost of the funicular, (around €1) so there's no need to walk into town unless you want to.

These options look great and cost friendly too! Thanks for your help. Byrd, please do let me know how Hotel Corso works out. (And have a great trip!)

LAwoman, did you rent through AutoEurope? Any feedback on that experience? I think we'll be picking up a car in Orvieto and dropping off in Florence.

Hi Annie -

Yes, we rented thru autoeurope and everything went fine. No complaints. Driving through Tuscany is a lot of fun, and we loved Orvieto too, wish we'd stayed another night, but we would have had to take that night from some other destination, and that's the hardest part of traveling in Italy - time allocation - because there are so many great places to visit there. Hope you have a lovely trip.

PS we dropped off in Florence too. Be sure you have a street map of Florence.

annie--we stayed at Hotel Corso in 2006 and it was fine. It is not fancy but very clean with good beds and a terrace. Orvieto is small and you can walk to the Duomo and most restaurants within minutes. The breakfast was included in the price. I highly recommend ristorante I Sette Consoli for lunch or dinner. We had a late and leisurely five course lunch so we skipped dinner. Have a great trip!

We trained from Sorrento to Orvieto last Oct and stayed at Hotel Corso for 1 night. It was fine for 1 night and walked to it with luggage. Able to walk around the town and easy to get to the car hire office the next day.
