Seeking info on Argyll Scotland
 

My husband and I are staying at a time share, Portsonachan Country Club, near Argyll Scotland in early Oct. I am looking for suggestions on things<BR>to do in the area. What is the area like? Also what will the weather like in early October ?<BR><BR>Thanks

Argyll is the county. Portsonachan is in it. It's on the banks of Loch Awe, which is "awesome". There's lots of good walking and a few nice pubs.<BR><BR>Inverary with its castle and jailhouse and boat are at one end, and the Pass of Brander is at the other. You can under Ben Cruachan and vists the Loch awe smokehouse. There's a calendar castle- Kilchurn- at the north end of the loch and lots of crannogs to vist and wonder about.<BR><BR>You're within easy srtiking distance of Oban and a boat trip to Mull or Iona- or even, at a pinch, Mull and Iona.<BR><BR>South of Oban- and you can loop round- there's Kilmartin Glen and its hundreds of prehistoric sites.<BR><BR>Spectatcular scenery. Weather likely to be lousy, tho you might catch the end of an Indian summer. Dress in layers.

As Sheila said Argyll is a large county and Portsonachan is a tiny speck in the county. The whole area is beautiful. You wil love it -- as long as you are not a McDonald, it being Campbell country ;-)<BR><BR>(After you have been to Glen Coe you will understand)

I agree with Sheila and Janis about everything, however, when you visit Glencoe, you will understand why the MacDonalds and the Campbells do not get along. Please note that Janis misspelt McDonald, which is actually a different clan from the MacDonalds. <BR><BR><BR>The blood feud between the MacDonalds and the Campbells was at its height many centuries ago, and although there will never be any shortage of mistrust and hatred between the two clans, they have not revisited the terrible Glencoe tragedy for a very, very long time.<BR><BR><BR>If you have a chance, try to get up to Crinan, for a lovely meal, why not try the Crinan Hotel. I visited it there, with a friend of mine who knew the West Highlands very well, and we loved it!!!<BR><BR><BR>The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. If you have a chance, rent the movie "Rob Roy", almost all of the footage was filmed in the Highlands. <BR><BR><BR>If you want to find an unfriendly Scot, you will really have to search high and low, so many of them are friendly, happy, and a delight to share a "wee dram" with!!

actually McDonalds and MacDonalds are septs of the same clan. (as any Graham would know -- I am a Graham too)

Not to start an agrument - I just meant some Mc's and some Mac's are in Clan Donald and some are in others.<BR><BR>You are correct - the ones at Glen Coe were Mac's.<BR><BR>And how can a Graham recommend Rob Roy when the Duke of Montrose was portrayed as such a villan?
