Margarita,
I stayed on Ile St Louis at the Hotel St Louis a few years ago. Price today is ~125Euro/850FF. This works out to ~110USD. The room was fine, bit small. I liked the location because I could walk from there to anywhere in downtown Paris. The Metro/RER was also not too far a walk. In addition, many good choices for restaurants in the neighbourhood. Good shopping along the main street. And traffic at night was minimal, since it is not on a main road to anywhere. Yes, you can get a cheaper hotel elsewhere. I just liked the neighbourbood feel to the place and was willing to pay a little more.

Hope this helps

Mike

There are 4 hotels on the island, including the Hotel Saint-Louis, a 3*. The Jeu de Paume, a 4* (where we stayed years ago), and the Lutec and Deux Iles, both 3*are the others. All are on the same street, Rue Saint-Louis en L'Ile. All have their fans. We stayed at the Hotel Saint-Louis last spring, right after a first rate renovation. We paid 1300 ff per night for the best room, on the 5th floor with balcony. 850 ff/night is likely the very lowest rate you may find at any of those hotels. Virtually all the rooms on the island are small. You should be aware that Hotel Saint-Louis has a notorious reputation for disregarding, losing and canceling reservations. We had a long-confirmed reservation threatened by a down grade to an unacceptable room. You will find far worse stories if you run a search.
The island is a spectacular display of 17th century architecture and a lifestyle many of us would like to emulate .

I keep hearing about these notorious reputations of hotels losing reservations! It has never happened to me and we travel to Europe twice a year at least. Are we just lucky or what??
We have stayed at the De Lutece on the Ille St Louis, and they are very reasonable.I think the 4 hotels on the Ille are not too expensive. We now stay in hotels off of Blvd St Germain and they are a little more pricey. I do not think they are over- rated at all..it is a lovely place to stay. What is nice is that being so small, there are only 4 small hotels there, so that makes it a little more exclusive feeling.and yet you can walk anywhere from that location, or take the Metro from nearby Ille de la Cite or either the Right or Left Bank.My recommendation would be either the Lutece or the Deux Illes.Expect small charming rooms, kind courteous staff, and do not expect anything American~you will enjoy yourself I am sure.

Thank you to everyone for their suggestions and advise. I've been to Paris numerous times but have always wanted to stay on Ile St. Louis because of its location, scenery and feel. I guess my other choice would be to stay in a hotel across from Ile St. Louis on the Left Bank but not sure of hotel names. Thanks again for the help.
Margarita

Margarita: Another choice: Stay in the Marais at a smaller hotel such as the Caron de Beaumarchais, which is no more than 4 short blocks from the island. It too has very nicely decorated, charming, though small rooms in an area with an edge to it. Probably a little less expensive than anything on the island.

There is actually a VERY cheap hotel on the other island, Hotel Henri IV. It has a charming location on place Dauphine, but it's not really the same as Ile St-Louis and it is really "basic" (no stars, I think). Being right on the quai St-Michel or Montebello (next one) is not really very quaint or charming with the tourist hordes, Tshirt and souvenir shops, etc. But, if you've been there you know what it's like. There are a couple hotels right there, one is just named Le Notre-Dame Hotel (1 quai St-Michel), a 3-star and it's been reviewed ok from what I've seen. You might consider the Esmeralda, a 1-star at 4, rue St-Julien-le-Pauvre. It is well-known and some people love it and a lot don't for service and upkeep reasons, but it has history. There is another 4-star hotel right on that quai also which is nice, but I won't look it up as it would be expensive.

Christina, do you or anyone else have more info on this Henri IV hotel? Quality of rooms, bathrooms, etc? Thanks.

Pat: I've never been to the Hotel Henri IV, (and have an alibi) (25 Place Dauphine; 01-43-54-44-53; 230+ ff/night), but, Frommer's has: "21 units, 2 with showers." "Rooms are considered romantically threadbare by many, and run-down and substandard by others. Each contains a sink, but not even the two rooms with showers have toilets." "Dramatic location at the northernmost tip [moving away from quais de Montebello and St-Michel(left bank) and near square du Vert Galant (Henri IV himself) and Pont Neuf] of Ile de la Cite."
Sounds like a charming but horizontal move from a hostel. As you know, and Christina mentioned, the two islands could not be more different.
