Seeking advice on transportation to and from Ravello.

Planning trip to Italy in May. Flying into Rome and then heading immediately to Amalfi Coast for five days before returning to Rome for final three days. Plan to use public transportation. Would like to spend time in both Ravello and Capri. I would appreciate advice on the best way to get to Ravello from Rome if we go directly there after arriving in Rome or from Capri if we were to go there first. It doesn't appear there is train service to Ravello from Rome or direct ferry service from Capri. Also is it easy to get to Positano from Ravello for a day trip?

I can adequately answer only the last piece of your query. Yes, it is very easy to get to Ravello from Positano. We took the ferry to Amalfi (not a long ride) and then a bus up to Ravello. You can take the bus from Positano, but I believe the ferry trip is faster.

The easiest thing to do is take the train down from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale. Then a shuttle bus or taxi to the Stazione Marittima. The boat fare from Napoli to Amalfi is only 10 euros. Once in Amalfi, you can take a blue bus from the center of town up the hill to Ravello for only 1 euro. The bus stops just outside the entrance to Ravello and the Villa Rufolo will be on your right side. Napoli (IMO) is the most central point for taking ferries to/from the Amalfi Coast, Capri, etc. Yes, it is very easy to take a boat from Amalfi (Ravello) to Positano for a day trip - it is about 35 minutes away.

P.S. Ooops! Typo re: Ravello. The Villa Rufulo will be on your LEFT side as you walk into the center of town. The Villa Cimbrone is also to the left, but a considerably further walk away from the town center. Both are beautiful places with out-of-this world coastal views.

Huitres' reco is a good one. You might take the train from Rome to Salerno where you can take the ferry or SITA bus to Amalfi. Then up to Ravello. Very beautiful place.

Next from Amalfi to Positano, either by ferry or bus. Lastly take the hydrofoil to capri, where you should stay at least one night to enjoy fully.

Then boat to Naples and train to Rome. Note you can take the train from either Mergellina or Centrale, two different routes.

Hope this helps. Buon viaggio.

Hi ray,

My plan would be to take the train from Rome to Salerno, the ferry to Amalfi and the bus to Ravello.

There is also ferry service from Amalfi to Positano and to Sorrento, as well as bus service from Amalfi to those towns.
