seating on Iberia airlines
 

I'm in the final stages of planning our trip to Spain for next month (despite the warnings of my friends that we are taking our lives in our hands). We will fly to Madrid on AA but then on to Granada on Iberia. 2 questions:1) I presume we will have to go through customs in Madrid-can we then recheck our luggage on to Granada from right beside the customs area as you do in the US or are we going to have to walk over to the domestic terminal to recheck our bags? 2)On Iberia's domestic flights, do they have seat assignments, or is it a free-for-all type situation (like on Hawaiian Airlines' interisland flights)? Thanks!

I'm not absolutely sure, but have flown enough on Iberia to hazard a guess. Since Iberia is a partner of AA, your luggage should be checked through to Granada. And yes, the seats on MAD-GRX are assigned. Don't hold your breath waiting for any hospitality on the short flight- last time we got a cup of water and a breath mint!

I'm sure if you would call American Airlines, they would answer any question you might have. If not, they would surely be able to guide you to the proper information source.<BR><BR>The customer service phone number for AA is 1-800-421-0600. If I knew what buttons to push after that I would tell you. I guess you'll just have to follow their menu.<BR><BR>An alternative, is to do a Google search on Iberia Airlines and find their website. They would also be able to give you the information you seek. <BR><BR>I do not have the phone number for Iberia Airlines. I'm sure their website will provide that information.<BR><BR>Curious

RachelG,<BR><BR>Your luggage will be checked through to Granada - you won't have to pick it up and go through customs in Madrid. <BR>You will have to go through immigration (passport control) at Madrid though.<BR><BR>Since Iberia is a OneWorld partner airline, AA should also be able to issue you your boarding pass (with seat assignment) for the Madrid-Granada leg at your departure airport in the US.<BR><BR>Hope this helps,<BR>Andre

My husband and I are also flying into Madrid in May. We however, are arriving using United (not an Iberia partner). We have purchased tickets through Iberia to fly on to Granada. Does anyone know if we must retrieve our luggage and recheck it to Granada or will United check it all the way through for us?<BR>Thanks<BR>Kelley

Thanks Andre,<BR>I e-mailed United customer support and they responded within 24 hours. I was informed that because I purchased 2 different tickets (one through United and one through Iberia)I would have to retrieve my luggage in Madrid and check it back through with Iberia. Good thing I have a 4 hour lay over once we reach Barajas.<BR>Kelley

UA once again shows its (lack of) commitment to customer service!<BR><BR>Since they obviously do have a luggage interlining agreement with Iberia - they're just not willing to have you benefit from the service because you didn't buy your whole journey through them - I would ask the check-in attendant very politely and naively if it were possible to check your bags through...<BR><BR>You might be lucky - who knows?<BR><BR>Either way, have a great trip!<BR>Andre

I flew on Iberia Airlines operated by Air Nostrum, a commuter airline. They served drinks in glasses and had assigned seating. The 50 seat plane had 2 flight attendants, more than 1 which is often found on US airlines.
