Scottish weather
 

We are going to Edinburgh and the Highlands the last 2 weeks of August. I keep checking weather.com and it looks like nothing but rain and showers every day. Can this be? When I check on Inverness and points north, it mostly shows partly cloudy. Our friends went last August and got caught in an unexpected heat wave. Should I look forward to 2 weeks of drizzle and rain? We want to hike and spend some time out of doors. Anyone been there in late August, please fill me in. Thanks!!

The weather in Scotland is at best unpredictable, more so than England. Spent a week in Fort William last month and had a fair amount of drizzle. A good point, the long range forecast is showing a warm dry spell (high pressure) around the end of the month...

Looking at weather today won't tell you ANYTHING about the weather the last two weeks of August. Heck - looking at the weather forecast the day before you leave won't tell you much. It could rain everyday you are there, they could have a heatwave/drought (80 degrees is a heatwave), or it could ranin one day and be 75 and clear the next. <BR> <BR>But - it probably won't be cold. And the weather on the East coast, west coast and highlands are all different. As a generalization - the east is drier and cooler, the west is wetter and warmer. <BR> <BR>Just take layers and have a waterproof jacket. you will be fine.

We spent a week in Scotland during mid-august about 5 years ago and got caught in one of these surprise heat wave - we hadn't packed for that possibility and were really uncomfortable touring around - throw in a pair of shorts, etc just in case. Have fun!

It's nice today. Could be awful tomorrow... <BR> <BR>Pack for layers. In August, it will be warm at worst. It may be damp; you may get real stormy showers (that is unlikely) but if you do they won't last. <BR> <BR>It should be perfectly OK for hiking, so long as you bring a waterproof outer layer (LOL)

BArb, I just got off the phone from talking to my brother in Edinburgh-it's pouring rain, absolutely torrential, and it's been really wet almost all summer so far.My sister and niece went to the Tattoo last week and sat in little pools of water!

But we have been in Edinburgh for 3 weeks for the festival and for most days it has been dry, warm and sunny.

Bob, well I only know what my family in Edinburgh tell me. Glad the weather was nice for most of your stay. Now, why did you feel the need to be so rude?

When you say "warm and sunny" -how warm?? T-shirt weather or does one still need a sweater/jacket. How about the evening? Thanks

Today we're talking 20-22 degrees. Mixture os sun with clouds and overcast. Yesterday was tipping rain. I go out without a jacket at night but would not do that to sit or walk outside. You need at least a cardigan or sweater outside after 8pm.
