Plus they are on a driving tour so crossing Rannoch Moor is not an option.>

When i took the train from Maillag to Glasgow the train stopped at a parking lot right in the middle of the moors and some passengers got off and into their cars. I guess they flew the cars in? You can indeed drive into the Rannoch Moors if not through them. And these moors are so so spectacular IMO they are well worth the detour.

PQ: The road only goes to the east from Rannoch Station. One cannot drive across the moor -- there AIN'T any roads.

Your little 'detour' to Rannoch Station would cost this OP approx 80 miles extra driving and add at least 5 hours to their schedule which is already a tight fit. Plus, they will have already viewed Rannoch Moor several days prior on their drive from Loch Lomond through Glencoe to Skye.

janis - these posts are generic and i often comment for other folks who are reading and to say one cannot go into the Moors by car is what i want to dispel. Not relevant to the OP but perhaps for others planning trips to the area. cheers.

OK - posting irrelevant things is your new bag. Good to know.
The OP has very specific needs/questions -- I'm sure s/he didn't think this was a generic thread where any old useful/useless info would be offered.

janis - you do things your way and i will not criticize you and let me do my things my way - OK - you do not dictate how things should be done here, right?
