ScotRail Split Ticketing

Tickets became available today for my journey in May with my best friend, when we will meet up with my sister and brother-in-law for a week on Skye, so we now have seats purchased from Edinburgh to Kyle of Lochalsh, with a stop in Inverness. I was doing some research the other night and was surprised to see that if I bought the tickets in two separate journeys (Edinburgh to Inverness, then Inverness to Kyle) that we could save $20 each. I'm still not quite sure what the advantage is to ScotRail with the split tickets, but I'm happy we're saving some money!

yes, the ticket pricing is a mess across the UK, partially due to governmental controls but also due to different companies trying to maximise their revenue.

There's a push to reform train ticketing. True to the history of British Rail, it is going slowly. Meanwhile, the invaluable www.seat61.com includes comments on purchase strategies.
