1st Arrondissement Hotel
I am looking for the name of a hotel that is on Rue de Rivoli near the Clarion St. James. It has been mentioned in this forum, is reasonably priced also. I think it is on a corner right across from the Louvre. The name is English sounding, not French at all.

If you have to do this again, you can go to http://www.voila.fr/PagesJaunes/ and enter the street and "hotel" and "paris".
You will get all of the hotels.

Ira, thanks for the info. When I was in Paris in Feb. stayed at the Clarion St. James. No complaints but was pricey for such a small room. Would like to stay in the 1st again - any suggestions besides the Brighton?

We love the Mansart, just off the Place Vendôme. Nice 3* with rooms prettily decorat and around the corner from The Ritz. Rooms are nicely decorated with antique furniture; spacious bathrooms done in tiles. On the same block are a pharmacy, ATM, and post office. Very pleasant staff. The only problem is getting a reservation: start early. It's easiest off season.

Definitely send a message--or better, a fax--to the hotel directly. I'd be very surprised if they're booked up for February this soon. If you get a return message saying they're not taking reservations yet, ask them to tell you exacly the date on which you can request a room and try again. The hotel has a rather odd system, and since it's quite popular with Europeans the management has no problem filling up.

The rooms at the Clarion were small? I must have lucked out then in March. You could have put 2 more beds in the rooms and still had lots of room. Our room overlooked a small courtyard and then St Honore. I stayed at a small hotel but very nice right around the corner in Feb and that was right across the street from Louvre St Romain. Very reasonable and 4 rooms to a floor. The name was Hotel Louvre Montana http://www.parisby.com/montana/pages/reach.htm

I did some research on venere.com for you (they show the hotels on a map) and there's another hotel that would fit the description you give (although not ON the rue de Rivoli) called the Mayfair. I don't remember it being mentioned here but gets good reviews on tripadvisor and is actually closer to the St James than the Brighton.

Yes, our room at the St. James was small - the smallest hotel room I've ever stayed in. They had to move us because I had requested twin beds since I was with my son, and our first room was one large bed. We overlooked the courtyard and there were 2 beds, a desk and you could hardly move. The ceilings seemed low and you felt very cramped in it. The bathroom was nice sized and the toilet was in a separate little room. But to me that's pretty small for the $$$. I didn't know if that was the norm for Europe at that price because that was my first trip over there. I stayed at the Kensington Close in London and the room wasn't huge but it was bigger. I got the package through Expedia and I didn't know either if you get the packaged deals if you got the smallest rooms.
