Scotland - When to go?

Beginning the oh so fun planning of Summer 2001! The family has decided on Scotland this time around. When is a better time to go ? June of July? We are flexible. My husband want's to fish and possible skeet shoot, daughter likes outdoors, hiking, and castles. Me...I like it all! I can't wait to go. When is the weather best and the crowds smaller? All opinions welcome. Suggestions as well.

Hi Kate, I was in Scotland in May 97, and had remarkably good weather, but I can't guarentee you'll have the same. Best advice is to spend som time roaming the highlands. ie Oban and area. Glencoe is not to be missed, it felt very spooky, and definately left an impression. Glasgow has a good mall walk that's nice for a change from the country. There's a good cafe in the National Portrait Museum in Queen's Street in Edinbough that has good hearty food at reasonable prices. I stayed at the Greens Hotel, a Best Western in Edinbourgh and really enjoyed it. A picture is assessabble through bestwestern.co.uk I beleive. Have a great time, and happy haggising!

Definitely June. I think the weather is better then a general rule; the schools are still in. Depending on the type of fishing your husband likes you may need to check for dates of seasons.

If there is anything specific you would like to know, please just ask.

You might consider going 'self-catering' - that is renting for a week. That makes life much less hectic for a family. We stayed in Callendar at the Leny Lodge. Centrally located between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Cost for their best, highly rated cottage was not more than we would have paid for two ordinary hotel rooms
