Scotland to Ireland - best way to get there?
Hello, can anyone help me with information on the Ferry from Scotland to Northern Ireland? We going to Scotland this summer and then over to Ireland. We were thinking of taking the Ferry, but wonder if it is more hassel that it is worth? From Northern Ireland, we will need to get down to Kerry, and would either take the train or drive. I am wondering if we should just get a flight from Edinburgh to Dublin instead? Does anyone have any experience with the Ferry? thanks!

Ferry runs between Cainryan, ScotLand and Dublin Ferry Port - a two hour float.
If you are going to Kerry you may find driving down to Holyhead and taking ferries to Dublin as fast or faster if just wanting to go Edinburgh to Kerry direct.
By train, bus and boat from Edinburgh the quickest links seem to take about 8.5 hours by public transportation.

Flights to Cork would be much closer to Kerry as would I believe to Shannon Airport near Limerick - pick up a car there and drive along the rugged West Coast down to Kerry, passing the famous Dingle Peninsula en route. End up in Dublin if Dublin's in the cards.
Do not neglect Cork IMO - one of the finest old towns in Ireland and a culture capital known for its traditional 'singing' Irish pubs.

From Glasgow it'll take 7 hours by bus and train via Cairnryan to just Belfast (the ferry does NOT go from Cairnryan to Dublin).

A cheap one hour flight makes much more sense. The days of trains and ferries have really been superseded by budget airlines, unless there's another overwhelming reason to travel overland.

It depends where in Kerry? oh yes Dingle,,so either Cork or Shannon would be the main Airports to consider. Sail and rail will take some extra time but will be cheaper if you have lots of baggage.

Train & ferry are far more of an adventure (and far better for the environment) than a flight.
You can buy tickets from anywhere in Britain to Belfast (or for that matter Dublin or any other Irish station) at www.arrivatrainswales.co.uk
For example, London to Dublin costs £38 in advance or £43 on the day, London to Belfast costs £49, that covers both the train and the ferry all on one ticket.

Gordon - I mixed up Dublin and Belfast - www.bahn.de says the boat goes to the Belfast Ferry Port - thanks for alerting me to my mistake.
