Have you been to Scotland/England before?

6 days is not an awful lot of time because there is soooooo much to see enroute. A general route could look something like 1 or 2 days in Edinburgh, 1 day for the Borders, 1 day for Hadrian's Wall/Northumberland, 2 days for Yorkshire and on to Harwich. I wouldn't drive from York to Harwich - I'd drop the car in York and take the train. It would save a lot of time/stress.

So there's nothing to see between York and Harwich, huh?

How about a day in York, and spend the rest of the time in East Anglia? (Biased, me?)

Depends on what interests you. Lincoln and Norwich would be interesting Ely is amazing. I think there is some sort of minor university in the middle of East Anglia with the odd punt but since I went to its older brother I forget its name.

Train limits access to some of these sights

There is plenty to see between York and Harwich! The Peak district, Lincoln cathedral, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridge, bits of Essex are alo really nice - Coggeshall is home to Paycocke house a fantastic timber framed house built in about 1500, and a barn dating back to the mid 1200's. But you will have to make decisions about what you want to see in the time you have.

Of course, there are HUNDREDS of things to see between York and Harwich. The area is worth a whole trip of it's own. However - the OP has six days to cover Edinburgh to Harwich, which is pretty unreasonable if they want to see much.

But since the OP hasn't been back, we may be talking to ourselves . . . . .

I am back sorry. We have decided to stay in Edinburgh from 6/22 to 6/26 and then drive to Harwich over two days. We decided to make the most of the trip staying in the Edinburgh area. Do you agree? First time to Scotland. Toured UK a few times but obviously alot more to see there also. We would love to spend more time but still work and only have a week in Scotland this time.
