Scotland spring 2026
 

Sister and I are planning a trip to Scotland spring 2026. Sister has been to Scotland on a cruise tour but that’s all. This will be my first time. We will be sightseeing in London, Edinburgh, and Glasgow and possibly more. I am curious to know how safe/dangerous it is to rent a car and drive in Scotland. We will be visiting some ancestral villages in the countryside of Scotland. my sister wants to get a private guide for these two visits to the countryside. I’m on the fence about it and I’m thinking we would get more bang for our buck on renting a vehicle for these visits and would like some history from other travelers who have done some of this.

We've rented cars and driven in Scotland regularly - Arnold Clark is our go-to agency. For the big cities, you don't need or want a car, as you get remote public transport wears thin, so a car (or private transport) is invaluable. It's not overly challenging driving in Scotland - but do familiarize yourself with the nuances if it's your first time (driving on the left, single track roads and passing places, roundabouts etc) - lots of useful resources on the web and videos you can reference.

Welcome to Fodors. OK -- Scotland is a big place -- specifically WHICH ancestral villages. Without knowing that no one can give you any sort of useful advice. How near Glasgow and/or Edinburgh? Are they accessible via public transport (if very rural not that likely)? Whether a driver guide is even feasible depends on where you are trying to visit.

We rented a car and drove all over Scotland with no issues (assuming you are a reasonable capable and confident driver). Even Google Maps was very accurate at that time despite some warnings. Enjoy!

The ancestral destinations are Whitsome Village for one side of the family and the other is from Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, & Roxburghshire.

Whitsome is a teensy place -- fewer than 150 population. It is 50+ miles southeast of Edinburgh near Duns and not far from St Abb's Head, Lindesfarne, Berwick-ipon-Tweed. A great area for sights/sites besides your ancestral connection but not a place you could easily visit by public transport.

Lesmahagow is a much larger town -- close to 5,000 population. Its in Lanarkshire and not really near many places of interest other than New Lanark. Its about 40 miles in one direction to Peebles and Ayr/the coast in the other direction. However New Lanark is fascinating -- its a UNESCO world heritage site and only about 10 miles from Lesmahagow. and about an hour south of Glasgow.

IMO/IME each would be really easy to self-drive

(Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, & Roxburghshire are three different counties. )
