Scotland Solo 10 days to rent a car or not?
Hi. I posted earlier but now have an extra day and wonder if I should rent a car. I fly into Glasgow August 24th at 7am. Want to visit the Highlands. Need to be in Edinburgh August 28th for 4 nights, followed by 1 night in Glasgow before flying home.
Was originally planning to travel by train to Mallaig and ferry/bus. But now wondering if a car rental might be better. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Lifeman, I just finished reading your trip report. I too love to eat well. Could you give me a rough itinerary for my 41/2 day driving trip? I need to be in Edinburgh by 4pm on August 28th. I read the NYT article and may try to stay at Kinloch which is near Potree. Or should I just have lunch there and stay in Potree? Thanks in advance.

"<i>Kinloch which is near Potree</i>"
Which Kinloch -- there are several. The one on Skye is about an hour's drive from Portree.
"<i>Ballachallan fish conservatory to see if they have a room for one night on August 27th. It seems like Edinburgh is not too far away.</i>"
It is just over an hour's drive to EDI airport and 90 minutes to central Edinburgh.

You have only four nights and the first day is after an overnight flight, so you may be a little jet lagged. I can't recommend a long drive on the back of that.
However, from Glasgow, head to Oban, across to Mull and spend a couple of days in Tobermory and around the island. Skye might just be a step to far North with such a limited time. A night in Oban on the way back could then take you to head back via Callender and see if you can stay at Balachalan (A fish restaurant with rooms). They only have three rooms, so you'll need to make sure you book.
From Callender, it's an easy drive back to Glasgow.
