janisj, thanks for the explanation. Haven't driven in California for several years and the roads seemed fine then. Personally, I'm better with single-track, sheep and lay byes than 5 lanes with everyone going over the speed limit. Also, not all that many roads in northern Scotland to begin with. ;)

Hi Peterfromca, I visited Mull in Sept. 2016, we drove from the very southern end of Mull to Tobermory and had no problems on the roads. Yes they are narrow and windy, but the pullouts are plentiful and the road surfaces were all in good condition. The other drivers were courteous and I would say driving on Mull is a non issue. If you really want to get off the beaten path, visit Moy Castle on Loch Buie. The castle is closed but you can walk right up to it. We walked past the castle about 30 minutes around the head of Loch Buie. It was just us and the sheep, beautiful and the highlight of our 7 days in Scotland. The village of Lochbuie has a map with the village sights, there is also a standing stone circle and a mausoleum.

Thanks everybody, including you dogeared. I think I'm set and appreciate the tips and advice. As noted above I guess I owe Janis a pint of whisky so Janis if you happen to be a wee Scottish lass with a taste for the finer things in life, and you reside in Scotland, the offer stands for a pint (or two). Thanks again.
