Scotland Posting Question

Okay, I still don't get it. Whenever I have posted a new thread, I have to choose Europe as the forum, and then UK as the topic. I have persistently tried to use Scotland in my message title. But after posting a new message, when I open the massive Europe forum list and then type in Scotland in the Search box, my message never shows up, even though 80% of the threads which do show up, are related to Scotland, but do not have Scotland in their title. The "Scotland Trip Report" that I posted this morning is an example. Do any of you see this thread listed when you type in "Scotland" on the opened Europe forum page? Or is there another way to accomplish this? Sorry to be tedious, but it is frustrating that postings might never be seen or responded to, when they get lost in the vast and endless "Europe" list.
Thanks--

If you click on your own name, you will bring up all your previous postings.

plr Apr 9th, 2006 01:31 PM

Thanks, Carry. I was aware of that. My point though, is that many others won't ever see a posting if it gets buried in the Europe forum list. How did you find this thread? Was it in the general Europe list or had you searched specifically for Scotland under Europe?

Barbara Apr 9th, 2006 01:43 PM

plr, everything thread posted in the Europe forum comes up in the general Europe list. If you search for "Scotland", then all the threads that mention Scotland anywhere in the thread will come up. It may be that your post is too recent to be included in the search.

Scotland isn't a country. Fodors don't have a section for it, any more than they do for Bohemia or Tuscany. Or for microstates that have really, as states, impacted the world, like Venice or Hansestadt Hamburg.

Scotland's exceptionally talented scientists, philosophers, economists, writers and mathematicians have probably had more effect on the world than any other group of brains since 5th century Athens. But they've all -especially Adam Smith. who's arguably the greatest English-speaker ever, after Elizabeth 1 - had their influence since Scotland stopped trying to do what it's useless at (govern itself) and concentrated on what its people do consummately excellently (tell other people, especially the English, how to govern themselves)

Post a message under UK and your questions might be answered. But actually, post it under "Europe" and it'll get replies if the subject or the question you ask is interesting enough.

Adam Smith was right. The free market always works. In Fodors questions, just as in conventional economics.

"Scotland isn't a country" ? Is England a country?

annesherrod Apr 9th, 2006 02:08 PM

What is Scotland if not a country?

Hmmmmm?

plr Apr 9th, 2006 02:52 PM

Ahem!! :)
I'm still tediously wondering if someone can tell me if they found this thread after typing "Scotland" into the Search box of the Europe forum?
Barbara's note does not hold true for me, which is why I am asking these questions.

janisj Apr 9th, 2006 03:07 PM

plr - you have assumed (understandable) that the search function works that way.

But no dice. Before any thread will display by searching, it first must be indexed by Fodors editors. And sometimes it takes weeks (or even months) for indexing to be done. So even if "Scotland" is in your thread 18 times - it will not be found by a search for "Scotland" until the eds get around to indexing it.

Just clicking on United Kingdom is more than enough - that is the best way to find threads about England/Scotland/Wales/N.I. But even that will only find about 1/2 of all UK threads since only about that many posters remember to click on a country before starting a new thread.

Thanks, Janis--I think you have completely covered what I was asking! I have not been searching "UK"--and that in fact does turn up all my posts rather than using the search box for Scotland.

Barbara Apr 9th, 2006 03:52 PM

Actually plr, I typed scotland into the search box and found posts from you, except your most recent one. You just have to scroll down to find them.

CotswoldScouser Apr 9th, 2006 10:19 PM

"What is Scotland if not a country?"

A province with ideas above its station. Just like Sicily or Catalonia.

sheila Apr 9th, 2006 10:44 PM

Grcxx3 Apr 10th, 2006 02:14 AM

worked for me when I put "scotland" in the search box

PatrickLondon Apr 10th, 2006 02:21 AM

You just to give the search engine time to register your new posts. It does't work instataneously.

sheila Apr 10th, 2006 03:14 AM

But it is soooo much better than it used to be.

plr Apr 10th, 2006 04:34 AM

You're right--the Trip Report is now showing up on the "Scotland" search this morning. Thanks all! You may now return to your off-topic political debate. :)

"What is Scotland if not a country? A province with ideas above its station."

You mean like Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Slovakia, Czech etc were until recently? Maybe like Ireland and Norway were a hundred years ago? Like USA used to be? LOL

rogerdodger Apr 11th, 2006 02:11 PM

Well, whatever Scotland is, I like it and it's people. Heck, I even like the English. Just kidding Kavey.
