Scotland Planning June 08
 

Hello and pardon my rather vague request here. We've just reserved a weeks timeshare at Moones CC in Aberfeldy for the week of 7 June 08. Now to plan the rest of the trip. We're thinking of doing another week in addition, either before or after Aberfeldy. So here's some questions:

1. Would we be advised to tour Edinburgh from Aberfeldy? Drive? Train?
2. We're debating whether to visit northern Ireland the 2nd week, or spend more time say in northern Scotland and/or Skye.
3. We like to hike. Areas near Aberfeldy to do so?
4. What guide book is a good start?

Thanks for any advice and I'm sure I'll be back for more.

My trip will just be a week. I envy anyone who can visit longer, so if you're looking for votes .. I vote the extra week in Scotland :-)

absolutely check out &quot;Scotland the Best&quot;, and absolutely don't go to Northern Ireland. NOT because NI isn't great - it is. But w/ only 2 weeks you simply don't have time for 2 countries and as it is, will <u>barely</u> have enough time to scratch the surface in Scotland.

For a day trip to Edinburgh - you can take the train from Pitlochry, Dunkeld or Perth.

There is a LOT to see/do w/i reasonable drives of Aberfeldy -- you will run out of days long before run out of things to do. And there are walks/hikes everywhere.

(BTW - It is the Moness Country Club - not Moones)

For your other week - you could go anywhere -- to the Northern Highlands/Skye, South to Ayrshire and the Borders, to the east coast, just anywhere. Other than hiking, what sorts of things do you want to see/do?

I would vote to spend the second week in Scotland. My family and I spent two weeks in Scotland in May/June of this year and it was just not enough time. Please look at some of the trip reports on this board to get some ideas. Planning a trip to Scotland is not easy. There is so much to see and do. Start with the general areas of the country that you would like to visit and began to get more detailed as you progress. Your personal interests will guide you.
Don't forget the good folks here at this site are wonderful. They made our trip so much easier.

Yup, I will be there as well, starting mid-June. Luckily, I have enough time off coming to me for three full weeks in Scotland, woohoo!!!! I will be with a group of 8 people total (friends and family). I've already asked some leading questions and ironed out an itinerary. Stay; stay. Spend half the week in Torridon and the other half in Skye

I need a defintion of hike; but it doesn't matter what you mean by hike, you can do it all round Aberfeldy.

Scotland the Best is a great book- I use it all the time. But you really need a geographic guide as well. I suspect you want one of the Lonely Planet, the Rough Guide or the Cadogan Guide to the Highland and Islands. Havea look in a librrary or a bookshop and see which one you like best.

For getting ideas of where to go in Scotland, I really love the Undiscovered Scotland web site.
