Scotland info wanted please
 

We are going to tour Scotland for 2-3 weeks -Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Isle Skye, Glasgow. We have a timeshare that we can use for a week while we're there. Wondering which location would be best to stay for the week and do day tours. Thanks.

I don't think I'd pick Skye because of the need to get on/off the island all the time. (although I would say it's a great place to spend a week just on its own) Edinburgh/Glasgow are geographically about the same north/south postion. If you wanted to do more in the lowlands then I'd just pick either east or west and go with Ediburgh/Glasgow accordingly. <BR><BR>Me, I love the highlands and I'd pick Aberdeen for that reason. Particularly if on the whiskey trail or for the Inverness area.

Your question is a bit confusing. Where is the timeshare?

Sorry for confusion..we can choose from many places - its with Interval International. We can pick a place nearer to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverness or Newcastle. Just wondering which area from these four would give us the most day trips from that location.

We are also planning a trip to London and Scotland. We will spend 3 days in London, then train to Scotland for 9-10 days. I am planning to book 3 days in Edinburgh, 3 Days in Ft. Williams and 3 Days Aberdeen, and take day trips from each location. Does this sound like too much moving around?

Scotland is quite compact making it ideal for day trips from many locations. I think I would give a slight edge to Edinburgh for day trips out, but am prepared to be debated on this point. <BR><BR>I actually prefer Glasgow as a city because it has done such a marvelous job of recreating itself in the last 25 years. And we are fond of the west coast delights: Oban, Dunoon and the Isles which make nice day trips but the postion of the various &quot;firths&quot;(long skinny, river/lake/estuaries) can be daunting when planning road trips.<BR><BR>My family hails from Aberdeen and if you can you should squeeze this city in, also, for its access to the Castle Trail, the Whisky Trail and the old-fashioned sea resorts of the north east coast as well as its great, grim, grey charm.

FYI, the best B&amp;B I have ever stayed in is called Ambleside on the Isle of Mull. It's located in the town of Tobermory. The people who own it are the nicest proprietors I have ever met. It's only 20 GBP per night ($30)! I guarantee you won't be dispappointed.

Canuck, on the assumption that your &quot;Inverness&quot; timeshare is near Aviemore I'd go with that, I think. NOT Inverness, tho'<BR><BR>Is Kenmore on the list? It's a super site and centrally located.<BR><BR>Syldrown-NOT Fort William. It's a dive. Nearby, if you like, but NOT, please, Fort William

IMO, Edinburgh has the most opportunities for diverse day trips.

Glasgow)<BR>and finally 48km from Inverness - Dalfaber Golf and Country Club in Aviewmore<BR>Whew! Anyone know any of these places??<BR>

canuck - I know all of them and have stayed at Cameron House (twice), Forest Hills (5 times), Kilconquhar (twice), and Slaley Hall. <BR><BR>Of all these, the best combination of location and amenities are Cameron House (#1), Kilconquhar (a close #2).<BR><BR>But I also love Forest Hills - the location is terrific for all of the Trossachs, Stirling, Glen Coe, Oban, and up into Perthshire. It is not as POSH as the other two but is usually easier to get into.<BR><BR>The problem w/ most of the Aviemore properties are they are more like pine Chalets or ski condos and do not have the same ambience as the others.<BR><BR>BTW - one you do not list is Craigandarroch in Ballater. This is another terrific one on a par with Cameron House.

My pick of those I know would be Kenmore. The location on the side of the loch is terrific. The units are lovely. It's very central in Scotland; and the scenery is terific.

I am curious to know from those who know Scotland best if this would be a country to &quot;park&quot; yourself for a week? Would you be better to be on the move - travelling in a loop rather than staying in one place?

I've got to pop in-we stayed in Aberfoyle just a few weeks ago at the Forth Inn and LOVED it. It was one of our favorite places. If you don't stay there, at least have dinner at the wonderful restaurant or a few pints in the pub-great place.

There are lots of places to stay for a week; but you need not to be weather sensitive even in high summer

I haven't done a trip report yet! Actually, trying to get all of our pics onto a website first...thanks for asking, though-i'll try to get that done!
