Scotland in Winter/New Years
Hello newsgroup,

I am travelling to Scotland for new years and the following week with my girlfriend and am greatly looking forward to it. I was warned off from visiting the Highlands because of their wintery condidion. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to visit in Scotland in Winter? (i've already scheduled Edinburg & Glasgow of course, thanks!) Can you confirm that I shouldn't go to the highlands? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Alex

Alex,

I shall soon find out as the highlands are where I am heading for New Years...

it'll be too late to help you alas, but, given that this group I am traveling with goes there yearly, can't be too bad!

I have heard that Edinburgh is nice for New Years...

Beth

I went to Scotland in early January and loved my visit! I went to see the Highlands and am glad I did. Yes, it was cold, but beautiful to see Glen Coe covered in snow. I still remember stopping in at a small pub and we sat in front of the fireplace while drinking delicious hot cocoa with peppermint marshmallows.

Have a great trip!

Alex

What's the issue with winter? Cold, travel? things being closed?

As Beth says we go every year. It all depends what you want.

Ok, so sometimes we get enough snow to close a few roads, but for the most part, just wrap up warm, and it won't be too bad! If you stay to the main-ish roads, then these are all cleared and passable 99% of the time, and you will find a warm welcome wherever you go! I live in Edinburgh, and yes, it's freezing today, but not too bad, as the sun is shining! If it gets really grotty, there's usually things to do indoors too.

Alex

We live in Edinburgh and travel up north quite regularly (just came back yesterday in fact). What exactly are your concerns? Are you worried about driving (if so as Jenny says most of the main roads are kept open) or are you worried about being cold?

The highlands have some extremely pretty views/scenes and are truly worth visiting in my opinion. When we were up there on the weekend the weather was cold but not bitterly so. You can probably expect some wet weather no matter where you are in Scotland. I tried to get accommodation around the Fort William area between Christmas and New Year though and found it to be very heavily booked (this was a few months back now)so I'd book ahead if you plan to go up north.

Enjoy Hogmannay!
Rhonda
