Scotland in July

What type of weather should we expect? We are taking a bus tour that will take us throughout Scotland. What should we pack for clothes? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

The most definitive I can offer is, it won't be cold (well, very cold, anyway).

It could be glorious or it could be wet or it could be anything in between.

Layers. Bring layers.

Went on a tour of England, Scotland and Wales last July into August (2001). Scotland was generally "damp" and in the 60sF during the day. We wore slacks and tops with sweaters (kept a jacket handy on the bus) . We lucked out and had very little rain however (mostly in Edinburgh). Scotland was much more beautiful than we expected--had more waterfalls than we saw in Hawaii a couple of years prior. Have a great time--the people are warm and wonderful and there's a great mix of culture and natural splendor.

Be sure to pack a lightweight nylon raincoat or cagoule

I spent the last week of July and all of August there 2 years ago and layers are a definite best dress scenario. One of the best things to bring is a hooded gortex jacket with pockets! That way you never have to carry an umbrella. It likes to rain, never really heavy, and usually doesn't last that long, but be prepared.

Beg to differ with previous poster. It can rain heavily and for days at a time. It's rained here every day for at least three weeks. Not all day, mind, but for long stretches.

Tony is correct - expect anything. It can get into the 80's (rare) or rain every single day (also rare)

On average July is wetter than other months - when you look at the avreage climate tables it is remarkable. Much more rain than in June and August. But you cannot go by "averages" since the weather is VERY changeable. One year I was in Edinburgh on June 12 and it was 78F which felt like 90F at home, the following year I was there on June 15 and it was 52F with blustery winds, dark overcast and intermittent rain..

The main thing - take layers
