Don't have the foggiest idea what you friend is talking about. The A93 along the Dee is a fine road - except maybe on August weekends or during the Braemar games when it can get congested, but even then it isn't too bad. And the roads from St Andrews to the A93 (either the A92 or A94 and then the A957) are also good roads.

Near the junction of the A957 and the A93 is Crathes Castle which is a "must" because of the castle, but mainly because of the glorious gardens.

Janis and Sheila, You appear to be great resources. Here is our goal. A week in Scotland doing day hikes from a single base. We are four middle aged couples. While we love to hike we are also interested in nice lodging and great food. Can you suggest any lodges in Scotland which would particularly suit our plans? Cost of lodging around $150 per night, September travel dates.
