Scotland - how bad are midges in July and how should we protect ourselves?

We would like to spend 5-6 days in the end of July in the Highlands of Scotland and do some hiking, bird watching and other outdoor activities. Just read that midges could be a big problem. Many people visit Scotland in the summer so there is some way many of you learned how to enjoy outdoor activities and not get eaten alive. Suggestions?

Whereabouts in the Highlands are you going to be? Some places are better than others.

We tend to use stuff called Autan when we are affected by it.

You can also buy midge veils in outdoor centres. Those keep the little blighters away from your head and face.

These English are so witty! (not!)

Pat, I have NEVER seen anyone wearing a midge veil, and believe me, they bite teh indigenous poultaion as much as the tourists.

Thanks, we are going to bring our OFF and buy Autan when we get there. OFF works on black flies here so it should work on midges there. I don't think we would like to wear veils when hiking.

Sheila, at this point we don't know our route. This is a last moment trip as we are going to be attending a few days of business meeting and decided to arrive in Edinburgh 6 days earlier. We are flying from Newark on Continental directly to Edinburgh, renting a car and driving to....Have no idea. My partner visited Scotland many times but it is my first trip there. I just got Eyewitness Guide, Frommers and Fodors and I am ready to begin my research but we know we will concentrate only on the Highlands this time. We are to hiking, birdwatching and focusing on natural beauty of Scotland. We will start in the airport in Edinburgh and end in Dalmahoy Marriott Hotel and Country Club for our business. I did not want to ask yet any suggestion as what route to take, where to stay (we realize we have to make reservations very soon) until I get some ideas by reading all my resources.
Sheila, if you are willing to help with some suggestions your input will be greatly apreciated

Hi Mucky, we don't drink. Do you think we will fit in? Also any suggestions on places for hiking, walking, bird watching, visiting castles?
