There is a monument to Shackleton inside Westminster Abbey. But I guess your trip doesn't include London.... There is also a statue of him in a niche in the outside wall of the Royal Geographic Society on Kensington Road (near Royal Albert Hall) in London.

Thanks Jean I will be in London nest week and will check out the Shackleton sites my wifes grandmother was a Shackleton who moved to the Dakotas/Canada.It is an impo0rtant part of the familys history

Just to mention. - and it might not be of interest - but the RSS Discovery which carried Scott and Shackleton to the Antarctic on their first voyage there, is berthed in Dundee and can be visited.Fascinating.

One last question is it worth going to the Ardnamurchan peninsula on our trip from glasgow up to Mull?

It's a long drive on very narrow windy roads but very much worth it for stunning scenery, Sanna beach, beyond Kilchoan, is unbelievably beautiful. The colours at this time of the year are wonderful.

You can reach Mull via the Ardnamurchan Peninsula instead of Oban- Craignure. To truly see most of the peninsula which absolutely beautiful, you would take the Corran ferry (south of Fort William and after driving through Glencoe) to Ardgour .It’s a really beautiful 12 mile easy drive to Strontian but after that you are on the King of Single Track roads to Kilchoan.The peninsula scenery is at its best from Glenborrodale onwards IMO.From Ardgour to Kilchoan can easily take you two hours and it’s not easy driving - narrow twisting, very short sightlines.

You can’t book the Kilchoan ferry, just turn up.Its a beautiful spot , super quiet, down at the harbour.Nothing there but turquoise water and sea birds calling.

If you arrive on Mull via Oban (gorgeous sail) then from Tobermory you can visit the best of Ardnamurchan very easily by going across on the Kilchoan ferry (queue up early) From Kilchoan, it’s only 5 miles to the gorgeous pristine white sands of Sanna Bay.You can then retrace that little route and head out 5 miles to Ardnamurchan Lighthouse, a magnificent spot and the most westerly on the British mainland.A little cafe operates there too…we sat there in warm sunshine last summer and I could have stayed all afternoon looking out across the wild coast and surging ocean.The Small Isles are on the horizon.

How long will it take to drive/ferry to get to southwest Mull from glasgow in one day assuming some stops along the way?Thanks

Assuming you collect the car at GLA airport (by far the easiest place to pick up a rental) and assuming you time things correctly so you don't have to wait for the ferry, just the drive+ferry will take approx 5.5 hours. So you can figure out how many / how long stops you can afford.

It sounds like we would be better off overnighting in Oban to break up the trip which gives us the opportunity of stopping on the way from Glasgow.I know it is hard to assess but to fully experience what the drive from glasgow to Oban has to offer swhat should we see on the way and how much time should we allow for.Thanks for any suggestions.you have been exceptionally helpful so far\

For the drive from Glasgow I’d always allow 3 hours (non stop) though from the airport you can cut off 20mins from that(IF you are travelling from there, I can’t recall.)
Loch Lomond would be your first potential stop, either Duck Bay Marina if it’s a nice day as they have a beautiful outdoor terrace lapped by the loch.If not so good for sitting outside then you could go on to pretty Luss village which is worth a stop anyway and where The Coachhouse is nice but no loch views.Very close though!

There are short boat trips from Tarbet a short drive further north, to see the loveliest scenery on the loch.

It’s really about the scenery on the drive to Loch Fyne and Inveraray, over the Rest and Be Thankful hill road.

Inveraray is worth a stop, an attractive small whitewashed town on the loch’s shores.The Castle is beautiful with lovely grounds.

Lunch…the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar (serves more than seafood) or , more casual, the Tree Cafe next door does good soup and excellent homemade cakes.The George in Inveraray is a popular pub for food too.Standard pub grub.

Once over the hill road beyond Inveraray, there is an obvious pull off spot on the A819 to view Kilchurn Castle.You can also stop at the car park on the A85 and visit the ruins.Beautiful spot.

St Conan’s Kirk is well worth a stop sitting above Loch Awe….a stunning and unusual church.

Cruachan Power station on Loch Awe also has a visitor centre if that is of interest.It also has a cafe overlooking the loch, The Hollow Mountain cafe.

Dunstaffnage Castle outside Oban can also be visited before you hit the town itself.It’s signposted off the main road.
